Journal Entry 2

2/6/17 – 10:17pm – my dorm room

far sounds- chair scooting in room above me, cars driving outside, someone talking/yelling a few floors up

medium sounds- someone’s door open, bathroom stall door slam closed, toilet flush

close sounds- hum of refrigerator, hum of roommate’s laptop running, my roommate breathing and moving around

overall level- low

descriptive word- calm

3 important noises- sound of distant people talking, cars driving outside, bathroom noises (toilet flush and stall door)

Journal 2: A Quiet Night at Home

  1. Monday 2/6/17- 10:41 pm- my bedroom
  2. Farthest: The faint hum of my dad watching tv in the den, an engine down the street
  3. Medium: A car drives by, my mom watching Planet of the Apes in the next room (very loudly)
  4. Closest: The sound of my keyboard clicking as I type, and the rustle of my sheets as I adjust my sitting position
  5. Medium sound level, little activity
  6. Nighttime
  7. The two tvs going at once, the clicking of my keyboard, the rustle of sheets

  • My living room- February 3rd- 4 PM
  • Far sounds- washing machine downstairs (buttons on a comforter clicking the sides of the washing machine)
  • Medium Sounds: 2 of my roommates talking in the other room- voices are muffled so I can’t make out exactly what they’re saying
  • Close sounds: One of my roommates taking a shower, dyson fan blowing hot air and rotating
  • Sound level: Low
  • Environment: Relaxed
  • Essential Sounds: Washing machine, shower, fan

Dorm Room Sounds

  2. Far sounds: people hitting something against the wall outside my building, people yelling and talking, music playing from someones car
  3. Medium Sounds: my roommate taking a shower and listening to different music
  4. Close sounds: the Golden State Warriors basketball game, game commentators talking
  5. Sound level: Medium
  6. Environment: Chaotic
  7. Essential Sounds: Car radio, roommates music, sports casters

1) My Kitchen, 2/3/2017 at 12:47 AM
2) The pipes upstairs clanking every so often.
3) My sister upstairs, milling about in her room.
4) The soft hiss of the oven as it runs, and the clicks it makes every so often, including the pilot light reigniting in a soft “fwoosh”.
5) Very low; very little.
6) Muffled.
7) My sister milling about at a distance. The oven hissing. The pilot light’s fwoosh.

Sound Journal 1

  1. February 2, 2017. 11:30 P.M. My Room
  2. There is a faint hum of voices from the TV of the room next to me. There is the moving of chairs on the floor above me.
  3. I can hear the hum of my computer and my  refrigerator. I can also hear the buzzing of the fluorescent light.
  4. I can hear my breath and the small creaks when I move my  neck.
  5. sound level: Low
  6. Calm
  7. The three essential sounds to this environment are the buzzing of the Light, the hum of the fridge and the muffled voices from the TV

Thursday Game Night

  1. 2/2/17 7:20pm at the Mack Sports Complex
  2. General hum and cheer of the crowd, the squeaking of basketball shoes, the  announcer over the loudspeaker, clapping from home team bench and from other side of the arena.
  3. The pep band, opposing team’s coach’s voice, clapping from away team bench, seats clanking, cheer team chants, swoosh of ball when it goes through the hoop.
  4. Footsteps of people going up and down the aisle, chatter that is more coherent, click of the people behind me taking pictures, the ball being dribbled.
  5. Pretty noisy with lots of activity
  6. Lively
  7. Crowd cheering, basketball shoes squeaking, ball bouncing.
