Journal Entry #5

1 – April 9th, 10am, Hofstra Museum of Art

2 – Furthest away sounds is far away conversations of the workers at the desk, the opening and closing of the main door, and the air conditioning

3 – Medium sounds are the footsteps of people browsing, someone reading aloud to themselves a plaque, one of the workers wrapping a table in some sort of paper for a presentation

4 – Closest is the talking of the tour guide showing off a book, the oohs and ahs of people watching, and my own flip flopped footsteps.

5 – The sound level is very low, it’s a very quiet place that only has one or two sounds going on at a time

6 – Respectful

7 – 3 essential sounds are footsteps, air conditioning, and the tour guide speaking

Journal Entry #2

1- 2/20/26, 1:16pm – City Line Florist

2- Co-workers chatting in the back room, a large truck driving past the store, general main road ambiance from outside.

3- The doorbell ringing as a customer walks in, a co-worker greeting them by the front.

4- The fridge door sliding closed, the humming of the fridge itself, another co-worker talking on the phone at the front desk, a customer’s footsteps, the cash register being opened.

5- Moderate. Mostly quieter, occasionally interrupted by louder, more prevalent sounds.

6- Busy

7- Co-workers talking, the fridge humming, the cash register opening.

Field Recording #1

Location: My front porch, 5:30pm

Identifiable Sounds: My dog’s leash, sounds from the kitchen inside (mostly the clattering of plates, I can also make out the sound of the dishwasher being opened), the front storm door opening and closing, footsteps, a dog barking blocks away, my neighbor dropping a hubcap in his driveway across the street, some birds chirping, ambient wind.
