Location: Adams Playhouse

The sounds heard in this clip consists of repetitive piano chords, some woodwind-like instruments, incoherent whispering, footsteps, and curtains rustling occasionally.

  1. 04/20/2024 – 3:38pm – The Playhouse.
  2. Sounds farthest away from me: dancers/crew members whispering to each other, crew members talking/responding in the distance, somebody coughing.
  3. Sounds at medium range: the choreographer giving directions/counting followed by the dancers moving around on stage.
  4. Sounds closest to me: typing on my computer, a dancer wrapping their ankle in tape next to me, the crew members near me occasionally adjusting themselves or moving items, a constant faint buzzing.
  5. The general sound level is subdued but passionate. The amount of sound activity is very particular and arranged.
  6. Description word: precise.
  7. Essential sounds: counting/directing, stage movement, hushed whispers/humming.

Location: my house

The sounds heard in this clip consists of my fan, music playing faintly from my neighbor’s house, distant clanging/beeping, and my housemates talking downstairs.

  1. 04/10/2024 – 12:30pm – Bits Tables.
  2. Sounds farthest away from me: cars driving by, buzzing, the occasional honking.
  3. Sounds at medium range: people talking as they walk by, birds chirping, somebody on a skateboard, the wind.
  4. Sounds closest to me: people talking at the table next to me, typing on my computer keyboard, drink sipping and swirling, bags crunching.
  5. The general sound level is quiet and controlled. The amount of sound activity is constant, with occasional peaks or gaps.
  6. Description word: tranquil.
  7. Essential sounds: nature, people, and general movement.

Location: Bits Quad

The sounds heard in this clip consists of rain patter, rain hitting my umbrella, wind, my rain jacket brushing against itself as I walk, and a very faint beeping in the distance at the end.

  1. 03/26/2024 – 11:04pm – My House.
  2. Sounds farthest away from me: scattered cars driving by and an airplane flying by.
  3. Sounds at medium range: my housemates talking downstairs, the wind outside of my window, a dog barking next door, my housemate’s car pulling in the driveway, and the front door opening and a short greeting.
  4. Sounds closest to me: my heater blowing, my fridge buzzing, and my stomach growling.
  5. The general sound level is quiet. The amount of sound activity is a constant buzzing/hum, but other than that it is low.
  6. Description word: soft.
  7. Essential sounds: wind/cars, quiet chatter and barking, and buzzing/humming.

Location: Davison #101

The sounds heard in this clip consists of background chatter that gradually gets louder, backpacks/chairs/papers moving around, occasional laughter, typing on a computer, and the closing of a computer as the clip ends.

  1. 03/05/2024 – 9:09pm – Calkins Dance Studio.
  2. Sounds farthest away from me: the wind outside of an open window, the buzz of the overhead lighting, the occasional sink/toilet outside of the room.
  3. Sounds at medium range: the door occasionally opening and closing, quiet side conversations, the occasional bang of a foot or a phone, people sniffling/moving around.
  4. Sounds closest to me: contemporary music playing, my fingers tapping on my phone, the occasional buzz of my phone, the choreographers teaching/counting to the music.
  5. The general sound level is a little above average at most times, but back to average/quiet when the music/dancing is paused. The amount of sound activity is mostly sporadic, but constant and usually unchanging when the music/dancing is happening.
  6. Description word: active.
  7. Essential sounds: movement, counting, and contemporary music.

Location: a house concert.

The sounds heard in this clip consists of singing, quiet drumming, guitar strumming, people talking, laughter, and applause/cheering.

  1. 02/21/2024 – 4:28pm – My House.
  2. Farthest Sounds: the cars on the turnpike, occasional honking, a very faint police siren.
  3. Medium Range Sounds: somebody doing lawn work next door, cars driving by, birds chirping, occasional indiscernible talking.
  4. Closest Sounds: one of my housemates’ playing videos on their phone, one of my housemates cooking in the kitchen, the buzz of our security system, the occasional readjusting of blankets or pillows on the couch that I’m sitting on.
  5. I would describe the general sound level as quiet and static, and the general sound activity as frequent but unpredictable.
  6. Description: cozy.
  7. Essential Sounds: cars, cooking, and phone videos.
