  2. Sounds farthest away from me: scattered cars driving by and an airplane flying by.
  3. Sounds at medium range: my housemates talking downstairs, the wind outside of my window, a dog barking next door, my housemate’s car pulling in the driveway, and the front door opening and a short greeting.
  4. Sounds closest to me: my heater blowing, my fridge buzzing, and my stomach growling.
  5. The general sound level is quiet. The amount of sound activity is a constant buzzing/hum, but other than that it is low.
  6. Description word: soft.
  7. Essential sounds: wind/cars, quiet chatter and barking, and buzzing/humming.

Location and time: Downstairs living room of my house, 2:00 pm

Far Sounds: Slight knocking of the water heater, electrical buzzing of refrigerator, car honking in the distance

Medium Sounds: Thudding of footsteps upstairs, closing drawers, airplane flying overhead, birds chirping

Close Sounds: Whirring of mini fridge, my typing, knocking at the door

Sound Description/ Level: Quiet, low level

One Word: Sedate

Most Important Sounds: Electrical buzzing, footsteps, typing, knocking

Sounds Heard: Heater, chattering, humming, clanging/movement

Sound Environment Observation 1 – Movie Theatre

 

1-    Date/Time/Location

–         February 2, 2012 / Midnight /  Lowe’s Cinema movie theatre by Roosevelt Field Mall

2-    Identify and list the sounds farthest away from you.

–         Sound of people talking, ventilation lull, door opening and closing, footsteps on carpeting, background pre-previews elevator music

3-    Identify and list the sounds at medium range from you.

–         People talking, Popcorn bags, People eating popcorn, chairs squeaking

4-    Identify and list the sounds closest to you.

–         Personal chair squeaking, others’ chairs squeaking, Soda being slurped, Soda bottles being opened, Squeaking of straws against soda tops, Rustling paper popcorn bags, Crunching/munching of popcorn

5-    Describe the general sound level and amount of sound activity.

–         The sound level is a sort of medium gaged overall buzzing throughout the theatre. There are people talking, but being mindful of others in the theatre. There is some background noise, but nothing is too loud, and it is very easy to have a hushed conversation with my boyfriend.

6-    Assign a one word description to the “sound environment”.

–         Buzzing

7-    Select and list 3 sounds which are essential to the sound environment.

–         The sound of popcorn bags, popcorn crunching/munching, background pre-previews elevator music
