Posts Tagged ‘Crunch’

Location: Colonial Square
Sounds: Footsteps, generator, grass, car beeps

  1. 04/14/2022-2:30pm- On a bench outside of Calkins Hall.
  2. Farthest Sounds: laughs from people sitting on the quad, traffic from cars on the nearby road
  3. Medium Sounds: the crunching of soil as a Hofstra Plant worker shovels into the ground, birds chirping in the trees above the bench.
  4. Closest Sounds: loud slamming of tap shoes hitting the floor from the opened window of a classroom in Calkins right above the bench, the flipping of pages in the notebook on my lap as a breeze comes through.
  5. There is a fair amount of sound activity, but it is really spaced out making it seem quiet or as if there is not that much occurring.
  6. One Word: Melodic
  7. The sound of the tap dancing is absolutely needed to maintain this environment, ever since doing musical theatre in high school I have always found the sound of tap shoes hitting the floor to be a pleasant sound thus the choice to pick melodic. The birds chirping and distant laughing also contributes. Being outside and seeing others outside enjoying the warm weather really indicated that we are in a new season. It felt very soothing to be outside and away from just sitting in a classroom, and it felt good to see others enjoying this time as well.

1. Date: 2/5/20 – Time: 10:45pm – Location: HofUSA

2. Farthest away from me, I can hear students talking and laughing with one another as they are entering HofUSA. Also, I am able to hear the shows displayed on the televisions at different volume levels in the far corners of the building.

3. In a medium range of sound, I can hear milkshakes being made and the server yelling out the menu items when some students’ orders are ready. I can hear when a student’s buzzard starts making noise, as well as them scooting their chair back in order to get up and get their food.

4. The sounds closest to me involve my friends and myself talking and laughing with each other. Also, I can sometimes hear a sipping noise when some of my friends are drinking their beverages or a munching/crunching noise when they are chewing their food. Internal sounds include me using words to ask myself when my food will be ready.

5. The general sound level is a bit noisy. There are many people at HofUSA conversing and eating, so there is a good amount of sound activity occurring. However, not as many students are here as usual due to it being a Wednesday night.

6. One word to describe the “sound environment” is “lively”.

7. Three sounds that are essential to the “sound environment” are the many conversations/laughs that are happening throughout HofUSA, the many televisions displaying different television shows at different volumes, and the server yelling to indicate when certain students’ orders were ready.

Sounds Heard: You can hear the sounds of the cars passing by with some honking going on sporadically, the crunching on my feet on the snow as I struggle down the street, and the wind rushing by.

Listen to

Location: Walking to class, from my house on Duncan Road to Emily Lowe Hall.
Sounds heard in the clip: The very satisfying sound of crunching a light layer of snow under my snow boots. The tempo is pretty fast and consistent and it is a constant sound in the clip. A car beep and a car starting are more specific sounds that follow, as well as occasional spurts of wind toward the end.

2. Snow crunching under a pair of boots.
