General hum and cheer of the crowd, the squeaking of basketball shoes, the announcer over the loudspeaker, clapping from home team bench and from other side of the arena.
The pep band, opposing team’s coach’s voice, clapping from away team bench, seats clanking, cheer team chants, swoosh of ball when it goes through the hoop.
Footsteps of people going up and down the aisle, chatter that is more coherent, click of the people behind me taking pictures, the ball being dribbled.
Farthest: The radiator, wind from the windows, talking upstairs echoing down the halls
Medium: Keyboard clicking from friends’ computers, front door opening, footsteps of people approaching
Closest: Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812 soundtrack playing on Emily’s computer, flipping of pages of the Drama 009 textbook, laughing between Emily and Jess
closest: the heating system, my roommate sketching, my keyboard clicking
The more I listen for sounds the more annoying they get. I am in my dorm typing this and listening to the clicking keys. A car is stopped at the intersection and blaring bass-heavy music. My window is closed, but I can feel the music vibrating in my chest and on my desk. My roommate sits on her bed sketching; the pencil is scratching along her paper. There is other traffic noise from the Hempstead turnpike. The wind could be hear whooshing through the bare trees, until my heating system came to life. Strangely, the music from the car can still be heard and felt from my 4th floor dormitory. Why are they still there? Has the light not yet turned green? Maybe they are parked along the side of the road.
the doors rattling, the echo of other trains, the wind moving past the car
the voice of the engineer announcing the stops, the conversations from the other end of the car, the rattling of the wheels underneath my feet, the sounds of the mechanics propelling the train forward.
my racing heartbeat, my rapid breathing, the bass from the headphones of the guy next to me who is clearly playing his music too loud.
the general sound level is loud
Bumpy
The engineer announcing the stops, the rattling of the train car, the wind moving past the car.
