The ambulance

Cars beeping

Cars wheels sliding on the streets

Cars’ engines

Car accident (it actually happened I was looking at the window and a car crashed with a taxi).

  • Identify and list the sounds at a medium range from you.

Other classes noises: hip hop, modern, ballet songs.

Professors in the different classes yelling, giving corrections

Doors shutting

Running, walk steps.

  • Identify and list the sounds closest to you (You can include internal sounds if noticed or relevant).

People chatting

Dance stepping on the floor

People singing

Professor talking

Music coming from the classroom’s sound system

  • Describe the general sound level and amount of sound activity.

The level and activity of sound was super high

  • Assign a one word description to the “sound environment”.

Busy

  • Select and list 3 sounds which are essential to the sound environment.
  • Professors yelling
  • Dance steps heard on the floor.
  • People talking

1. Date: 2/18/20 – Time: 12:40pm – Location: AMC 34th Street 14 (Auditorium 11)

2. Farthest away from me, I can hear the doors being opened and closed shut as people are entering the Auditorium, as well as those same people walking up the steps towards their seats.

3. In a medium range of sound, I hear a few people around me chatting with one another (before the start of the movie) and munching on their popcorn. I also hear the audio from the movie, since there are speakers placed throughout the auditorium

4. The closest sounds involve me munching on my popcorn and creating noise from having to forcefully remove my drink from the sticky cup holder. Moreover, I can hear the sipping noise while I am consuming my beverage.  There are inner thoughts in my head too, wondering how the movie will turn out.

5. The general sound level is loud, but not too loud, due to the nice volume level within the movie. Everyone in the Auditorium is sitting still for the most part, so there is not much sound activity happening other than the sound in the movie.

6. One word to describe the “sound environment” is “relaxing”.

7. Three sounds that are essential to the “sound environment” are the audio from the movie, small chatter as people react to things in the movie, and the munching of popcorn.

  1. This is recorded from the 4 train at Grand Central Station
  2. Sounds heard include the Subway announcement, people chatting, train breaking.
  1. NYC Subway, A-train, February 1st, 2017
  2.  the doors rattling, the echo of other trains, the wind moving past the car
  3. the voice of the engineer announcing the stops, the conversations from the other end of the car, the rattling of the wheels underneath my feet, the sounds of the mechanics propelling the train forward.
  4. my racing heartbeat, my rapid breathing, the bass from the headphones of the guy next to me who is clearly playing his music too loud.
  5. the general sound level is loud
  6. Bumpy
  7. The engineer announcing the stops, the rattling of the train car, the wind moving past the car.

  1. Location: NYC, 55th Street
  2. Sounds: People talking, Truck engine, Truck breaks, tires on the wet street, car horn, faint sound of the rain drizzling

1. 2/8/15, 9:50am: On our way to city class, the corner of 29th Street & 6th Ave

Farthest Sounds: Cars honking way down the street, muffled music from inside the venues we pass. A woman way ahead scolding her dog for taking the liberty of pooping on the sidewalk.

Medium Sounds: A crazy (homeless?) man shouting about (what, to his mind, was) social justice. His voice is hoarse and pitched much higher than his optimal range because he is so furious and intent on expressing it. My classmates who have fallen a bit behind are giggling about some gossip they don’t want the rest of the group to hear.

Closest Sounds: My, and my other classmates’, hurried footsteps on the sidewalk, with occasional crunching on ice/snow that isn’t yet melted. (The ones who, like me, desperately need Starbucks before class are making a pointed attempt at picking up our feet so we can get there on time). Jack talking about hypochondria and laughing.

Sound Level: Not nearly as loud as NYC gets, but we defy decibel expectations for a group of students heading to class on a Saturday morning.

One-Word Description: Bustling

Three essential sounds: Homeless man shouting, cars honking, footsteps.

1. 2012-03-23 — Waiting for Megabus @ 28th and 7th

2. Subway rumbling below

3. cars, horns, trucks and busses rumbling

4. Footsteps, people around me taking, people rolling suitcases.

5. It’s New York, everything is in motion. Cars, busses, loud people. There is nothing particularly out of the ordinary compared to a regular day anywhere in the city.

6. Moving

7. Conversations, subway below, cars and trucks.
