Sound Observation – Bar Social 10pm

Georgia Andre

– Date/Time/Location

– 5/3/2012/ 10pm /Bar Social (across the turnpike from Hofstra)

2- Describe sound far away

People talking around the bar, loud music

3- Identify and list the sounds at medium range from you

– People talking around my table, loud music

4- Identify and list the sounds closest to you.

– Me chewing thai calimari, the sound of chopsticks falling/clinking/rubbing together in the process of eating the calimari,  the sound of my glass placed on the table, my friend talking to me, and the loud music playing Gotye “somebody that I used to know ” (which really makes me feel depressed about my breakup).

5- Describe the general sound level and amount of sound activity.

-Its a smaller room but I’m sitting in the less crowded eating area… still a loud busy sound level with a combo of talking and music and glasses.

6- Assign a one word description to the “sound environment”.

– BUZZ

7- Select and list 3 sounds which are essential to the sound environment.

– Glasses, Loud Music, Talking

Sound Observation 7 –  Rosevelt Feild Mall (in front of Express)

Georgia Andre

– Date/Time/Location

– March 22  / 5:00pm / Enterance near the store Express / Rosevelt Feild Mall

2- Identify and list the sounds farthest away from you.

– The sound of other people talking, music playing from other stores

3- Identify and list the sounds at medium range from you.

– DJ/Upbeat Music with quick beat playing in Express, my friend Mernielyn talking, People walking/brushing by

4- Identify and list the sounds closest to you.

– My own voice, the sound that ice coffee makes when you swirl it around and there’s some ice still at the bottom.

5- Describe the general sound level and amount of sound activity.

– The sound level is very intense – there is a lot of sound so altogether everything sounds muffled – except when you walk past a store sometimes you can hear the specific music – for example the music in Express which is played way too loud – once we entered the store we had to pretty much scream to communicate. Sound gets drowned out in the mall because the ceilings are really high so everything just goes into an abyss.

6- Assign a one word description to the “sound environment”.

– Multitasking

7- Select and list 3 sounds which are essential to the sound environment.

– A lot of people passing by talking/Loud Talking, DJ/Upbeat Music from Express, Music/Voices coming from other stores

1. 2/2/12  Au Bon Pain, Hofstra University: 5:45 pm

2. The sounds farthest away from me are chairs scraping the floor as they are pulled out and then pushed in. Some people are talking to each other in normal voices.

3. At medium range, there are people talking as well, and their voices are louder than the people far away from me. A girl laughs noticeably and her laugh is very high pitched and startling.  A speaker is playing music on my left side.  The song playing is “I Feel Like a Woman”. The volume seems very loud for such a small area.

4. The sounds closest to me are people talking behind me. Someone is playing with a set of keys and I can hear them jingling repeatedly, almost like they are hitting something, maybe the table.

5. The general sound level is very loud and harsh. Sounds are coming from all directions except for my right because I am near the window. There is constant noise that seems to fill the room.

6. I would describe this sound environment as “bustling”.

7. Three sounds essential to the sound environment are the people talking around me, the chairs scraping over the floor as people go to sit down with their food, and the music playing over the speaker.  Together these sounds are clues to the fact that the environment is a place where people can leisurely enjoy food, conversation, and music, and the atmosphere with these sounds conveys a sense of community and familiarity.

1- Location: My living room

2- Sounds Heard: 3 different conversations between various people
