March 11th, 1:00am – Corner of Belmont and California Ave.

Farthest Away: Girls screaming and the whoosh of cars driving on a wet road.

Medium Range: The rustling of leaves from the wind.

Closest: The softness of the person next to me’s breathing, and the water dripping onto the ground from gutters, drains, and roofs.

Sound Level: Everything was at the same level regarding my ears. Since I was hearing everything at a consistent level, the farthest away sounds were actually louder than the closest sounds, so that my ears could pic them up as being at the same volume.

Sound Activity: Everything was very consistent except for when the cars would stop at the traffic light. However, even though the cars on the turnpike directly in front of me were stopped, I could still hear other cars driving on the wet pavement a couple streets away.

Description: Wet

Date: 3/10/23

Location: the walk from the Student Center to VP

Far sounds: someone singing or playing music (faint), cars driving

Medium sounds: planes overhead, doors to the tower dorms opening

Close sounds: footsteps, jangling keys, stuff in bags rustling, clothes brushing, footsteps, breathing, friends talking

Sound description/level: It’s quiet, which make the quieter sounds like breathing and clothes brushing louder. The general feeling is calm. It’s also nighttime, so it’s dark out, which lends itself to the muted nature of the surrounding world.

One word: muted

Most important sounds: footsteps, jangling keys, friends talking

Hofstra Gym, second floor

Far sounds – hum of machines surrounding me, weights hitting floor downstairs, muffled conversations as people run by, feet hitting the track surrounding me

medium sounds – rhythmic hum of treadmills as people run, tv above me, music on radio in gym speakers, conversation behind me, pull of the paper towel machine

Close sounds – music pulsing in my headphones, water bottle clanking against the machine, the hit of my feet on the treadmill 

Sound level – full of random clashing background noise, but overall medially mellow. Not too rambunctious. 

one word – focused

Most important sounds —  rhythmic hum of treadmills as people run, pull of the paper towel machine,  weights hitting floor

Bill of Rights Laundry Room – 3/10/23 – 9:40am

Far sounds: Cars passing outside

Medium Sounds: metal clacking inside washers/dryers

Close sounds: dryer hum, machine creaking, water filling washer, buzzer when laundry finishes

Sounds level: consistently noisy but not too loud

One Word: busy

Most Important: dryer hum, metal clanking, water filling washer

Time: 6:00 pm

Location: Bits & Bytes

Far Sounds: indistinguishable conversations in the back room, electricity humming, food wrappers rustling.

Medium Sounds: garbled voice speaking over the phone, people talking, chairs scraping across the floor, hands clapping occasionally. 

Close Sounds: fan whirring overhead, keyboard clicks, table wobbling, fabric rubbing.

Sound Description/Level: quite consistent, there is a steady drone of voices engaged in different conversations, but they all blur into one another. The other sounds are mere accents dropped in occasionally.

One Word: bustling

Most Important Sounds: people talking, chairs scraping, voice on the phone

    Far away: The Hofstra Shuttle moving around, footsteps
    Medium: Very windy, some cars driving, someone locking their car with the alarm
    Closest: Birds, the gardeners trimming the grass and collecting shavings in garbage bags
    The sound level is medium.
    Descriptor: Tranquil
    The essential sounds are: the soft footsteps, the wind, and the gardeners.

March 6th, 4:26PM, Shapiro Family Hall lobby.

Furthest: Heating system humming, very distant talking, echoes from the piano. 

Medium: Footsteps walking towards outside, piano playing melodically.  

Closest: Students talking, the double glass doors closing, fabric from my clothing moving. 

Sound level varies extremely as the people who pass me talk loudly and their footsteps ring, contrasting with the light piano tunes and the echoing. The amount of sound activity is spirited as there is a strong contrast between low tones and high.

One Word Description: Spirited
