2. Sounds furthest from me:

  • Conversations heard outside the door
  • Music coming from  a dance rehearsal
  • A door opening and closing

3. Sounds at a medium range from me:

  • Cars passing by outside
  • The air conditioner

4. Sounds closest to me:

  • Sound of myself eating an apple
  • Typing on my laptop

5. The level of sound activity and general sound level:

Quiet and very dull. Nothing is happening, just mostly ambient noises from around.

6. Word to describe sound environment:

Waiting

7. Three sounds that complete sound environment:

  • Sound of myself eating an apple
  • Music from the next room
  • Door opening and closing

Sound Journal # 11 – Spring!

1. Walking down Hamilton, toward Breslin, Thursday, April 24th, 2014, 2:30 pm.

2. Sounds furthest from me: In the distance, I can hear a riding mower, squealing into gear as the blades are engaged and the subsequent whir of cutting grass.

3. Sounds at medium range from me: On my other side, I can hear children laughing and screaming as they have recess on the playground at the California Ave school. This, along with the sound of the mower in the distance, really brings in the feeling of spring.

4. Sounds closest to me: The wind is rustling the leaves in the trees as I walk beneath them. I can also hear several birds chirping, although, as I’m not a bird expert, I couldn’t name what they were, but they are featured in my field recording. They are singing happily, sharing in my joy on this beautiful day.

5. General sound level and level of activity: The sound activity is pretty busy with the sound of the children screaming and laughing, combined with the undertones of the mower and the wind and birds. The sound level is medium, though.

6. Word to describe sound environment: Springy.

7. Three sounds that complete the sound environment:
— the lawn mower
— children laughing and playing
— birds chirping

1. 4/22/2014, 7:17 AM, Basement of Bits and Bites: My Anthropology Class

2. Identify the sounds farthest from you:  I sit next to the right wall of the classroom, so I can hear the muffled sounds of the class that is going on in the room adjacent to this one.  I can also hear someone stomping around upstairs, and perhaps down the steps that are above/next to this classroom.

3. Identify the sounds at medium range: Most of what I’m hearing is at medium range.  My professor is changing accents as she notes the fact that no one ever shows up for this class.  She is already late, so she is deciding to start… I can hear my few fellow classmates shuffling through their belongings and the projector humming.  There is a constant weird sound in this room: it’s like there is a marble bouncing around a pipe or something that is always vibrating because of the machinery in the building.

4. Identify the sounds closest to you: Closest to me, I can hear my laughing Buddha bracelet scratching against my MacBook.  I can hear the girl behind me “mmhmming”  when she agrees with something that is said.  I can hear the boy next to me typing on his computer (which has a sloth wallpaper).  When my professor walks near me, I can hear her boots scuff the floor.

5. General sound level and activity:  The general sound level and activity of this space is sleep-inducing.  The amount of constant sound gives the room a general hum, and the energy of this class is almost always dispirited.

6. One word to describe the sound environment: Dull

7. 3 essential sounds to the sound environment: 

-The low marble rumble

-My professor speaking and walking around

-My fellow classmates

2 – Identify and list the sounds farthest away from you.

  • people in the Atrium having varied conversations
  • Laughing from an involvement meeting in the back room
  • My supervisor typing frantically at his keys

3 – Identify and list the sounds at a medium range from you.

  • one of the GA’s unwrapping their lunch
  • the phone ringing in the distance
  • my boss talking to her assistant about exam care packages

4 – Identify and list the sounds closest to you.

  • My fingers clicking against the keys of my keyboard
  • the slurping of my neighbor as she drinks her coffee
  • the click of the stapler as I put staple forms together

5 – Describe the general sound level and amount of sound activity.

  • For a Thursday morning in the office, there is a surprisingly loud sound level. While not obnoxious or excessive, there is still a lot of noise going on. The sound activity is also quite high, as there are a lot of varied noises going on in the office.

6 – Assign a one word description to the “sound environment”.

  • Officey

7 – Select and list 3 sounds which are essential to the sound environment.

  • clicking of the different keyboard
  • the slamming of the stapler
  • the phones ringing

1 – 4/21/14 – 4:00pm – Stop and Shop Deli, South Setauket

2 – Identify and list the sounds farthest away from you.
-A customer plopping her vegetables on a scale.
-The shopping carts squeaking.
-The misters spraying water vapor on vegetables like spinach and kale and carrots.

3 – Identify and list the sounds at a medium range from you.
-A deli employee shouting to another employee to get him to bring out more turkey.
-Another customer, this time talking on the phone.
-A stocker placing newly packaged cheese and specialty items on the showcase.

4 – Identify and list the sounds closest to you.
-The ticket machine printing a ticket.
-A deli employee asking, “what can I get for ya?”
-The slicing sounds the slicer makes as it cuts meat; another slicer is being used for slicing cheese.

5 – Describe the general sound level and amount of sound activity.
-The sound level was pretty quiet overall, while there were times it raised to a medium level. A bunch of the sounds like the ones that came from the misters, slicers, and the stocker were low in volume. The shouting, talking and squeaking were louder.

6 – Assign a one word description to the “sound environment”.
-Scrumptious.

7 – Select and list 3 sounds which are essential to the sound environment.
-The sounds of the ticket machine.
-The slicers slicing the meat and cheese.
-The misters making mist.

1. Lowe conference room, Tuesday April 22, 7:00 PM

2. Sounds furthest from me:

  • Someone yelling outside
  • The heating unit has just turned on
  • Someone walking quickly outside in the hallway to the studio

3. Sounds at a medium range from me:

  • Abbie is humming, playing music and tapping her foot across the room
  • Noah’s pencil is scratching at his paper
  • The door to the room keeps being opened and closed.

4. Sounds closest to me:

  • My typing
  • My phone keeps vibrating with texts from my mother

5. The level of sound activity and general sound level:

Fairly quiet, calm and peaceful if people would stop coming and going.

6. Word to describe sound environment:

Studious

7. Three sounds that complete sound environment:

  • People walking in the hallway
  • Abbie’s music
  • Noah writing.
