3:30pm March 16th Fields near C-Square

Far: cars, people talking

Medium: wind, birds

Close: footsteps

Faint

Peaceful

Birds, talking, footsteps

Location: Parking lot, turning onto Hempstead Turnpike

Sounds Heard: Muffled sounds of the car starting, the windows being rolled down, clicking turn signal, switching from reverse to drive, wheel turning, tires against the pavement, other cars passing, wind

Here is the field recording to follow my sound journal. Lawn mowers, children and birds, OH MY!

1. Walking down Hamilton, toward Breslin, Thursday, April 24th, 2014, 2:30 pm.

2. Sounds furthest from me: In the distance, I can hear a riding mower, squealing into gear as the blades are engaged and the subsequent whir of cutting grass.

3. Sounds at medium range from me: On my other side, I can hear children laughing and screaming as they have recess on the playground at the California Ave school. This, along with the sound of the mower in the distance, really brings in the feeling of spring.

4. Sounds closest to me: The wind is rustling the leaves in the trees as I walk beneath them. I can also hear several birds chirping, although, as I’m not a bird expert, I couldn’t name what they were, but they are featured in my field recording. They are singing happily, sharing in my joy on this beautiful day.

5. General sound level and level of activity: The sound activity is pretty busy with the sound of the children screaming and laughing, combined with the undertones of the mower and the wind and birds. The sound level is medium, though.

6. Word to describe sound environment: Springy.

7. Three sounds that complete the sound environment:
— the lawn mower
— children laughing and playing
— birds chirping

1- 2/24/13 11:30 AM Emily Lowe quad

2- Music from Earth Day festival in the distance, voices from over by bits

3- Heels against the concrete path, a traditional (native american esq?) drum lesson

4- Pages of a book flipping, me slurping a milkshake, two friends practicing lines

5- A calming environment, not much sound at all, but enough so that I couldn’t fall asleep

6- Serene, Springy, Relaxing.

7- Music, the constant drum beat patterns, the book

1- 4/17/13 – 7:15 P.M.  – Drama Lounge
2- Identify and list the sounds farthest away from you. – Furthest from me I hear the sounds for the last three or four sorority brothers that are still out playing catch with the football in the last few minutes of sunlight on the quad for the day. They are all standing in a square shape and facing each other diagonally across the quad. I could distinctly hear the noises of the soft leather smacking into their hands as they hurled the ball across the grass to each other. Every so often you could hear a deep shout of their voices at each other and then the thud and tumbling noise as the ball hit the ground if they missed the catch.
3- Identify and list the sounds at a medium range from you. – Medium range from me I can hear the sound of the cast of Carrie belting their music from 110. They are constantly starting and stopping, repeating the same lines of music over and over until they master every note and tone of the music. Every time they ran the music it began with. “He does not know… I will be there tomorrow… all alone…” Every once in a while the noises that would come from their voices would suddenly spike in volume as an actor opened the door to the room and shut it again.
4- Identify and list the sounds closest to you (You can include internal sounds if noticed or relevant). – Closest to me I can hear the sound of the three people in the lounge conversing and reviewing their monologues before they performed for the faculty. The nerves were running high but almost everyone rehearsing their lines was rehearsing to themselves in a soft whisper to themselves.
5- Describe the general sound level and amount of sound activity. – Furthest and closest to me the sound is  soft while at a medium range the sound is almost overwhelming.
6- Assign a one word description to the “sound environment”. – Springtime
7- Select and list 3 sounds which are essential to the sound environment. Note: you need to try to figure out what sounds make up this environment and which of those sounds need to be there for the feeling of the environment to stay intact. – Football, singing, whisper of lines

Location: Outside Lowe, midday

Sounds Heard: birds, light breezes, many intimate conversations, drama students
