Sound Journal #9

1- Wednesday, April 2nd, 2014, 11:35am, Adams Playhouse.

2- Identify and list the sounds farthest away from you.

Sound of dancers warming up, tap shoes tapping, murmuring of conversations, shuffling of people going to their seats.

3- Identify and list the sounds at a medium range from you.

Conversations between students, seats folding down, footsteps.

4- Identify and list the sounds closest to you (You can include internal sounds if noticed or relevant).

Noah and Ronnie having a conversation, opening of a backpack, iphone ringtones.

5- Describe the general sound level and amount of sound activity.

The sound level is loud and constant but very blended into eachother, it is difficult to make out any conversations.

6- Assign a one word description to the “sound environment”.

7- Select and list 3 sounds which are essential to the sound environment. Note: you need to try and figure out what sounds make up this environment and which of those sounds need to be there for the feeling of the environment to stay intact.

Journal Entry

1) 4/1/14, Student Center back area, 8:59 PM

2) Identify and list the sounds farthest away from you.

People in the food service area laughing loudly at an unknown joke, the gates of the food service area slamming shit, the metal bars jingling, The Lackmann manager exclaiming “Estamos Cerrados!” – we are closed

3)- Identify and list the sounds at a medium range from you.

The bus people placing new silverware into the holders, chairs dragging as people get up to leave, girls a few tables over making fun of the song “Let me take a selfie”

4- Identify and list the sounds closest to you (You can include internal sounds if noticed or relevant).

Me, sniffling my nose, feeling illness come on, Christina clacking at her Mac, someone else in our group scraping their knife and fork together, Christina gasping as she gets a text saying P-Safe was looking for her.

5- Describe the general sound level and amount of sound activity.

There is a lot of sound going on as the Student Center closes for the evening. The level is high, although muffled a bit by the acoustics of the room. There is a lot of different sounds happening, so the sound activity is very high.

6- Assign a one word description to the “sound environment”.
