1. 2/9/12, 11:27 pm, Colonial Square

2. The sounds farthest away from me are the t.v. playing in the other room and my friends talking loudly. Through the wall in the next suite there is a girl yelling.

3. The sounds at a medium distance away are the jingling sound as someone takes off a belt, and their feet making sound on the tile floor. A chair is pulled out. Mouse clicks are heard.

4. Close to me I can hear the fan-like sound of the HVAC. I also notice how much I am sniffling.

5. The general sound level is somewhat quiet, the sounds are spread out. The sound activity is steady.

6. This environment can be described as “sporadic”.

7. Three sounds essential to the sound environment are my sniffling every so often, the random mouse clicks, and the t.v. going in the background.  These sounds make up what can be considered a “dorm” environment, where there is a mix of productivity and procrastination.

1. February 9, 2012 10:55 in front of Vander Poel Hall.

2. The humming of a generator, students speaking at Dutch Treats and Kate and Willies, cars outside of the grounds.

3. Cars driving around the parking lot, the opening and closing of the door to the surrounding buildings, a bike speeding past, a plastic bag shuffling.

4. Footsteps of the person next to me, the clinking of the metal on their boots, the click of the doors unlocking when a card is swiped.

5. The general sound level is quiet.  It’s pretty late on a school night, so not much activity is about.

6. Calm.

7. The generator humming, the cars passing in the parking lot, and the footsteps.

Location: My dorm room

Farthest sounds: Elevator doors opening, cars outside.

Moderate sounds: The opening and closing of other doors on my floor, water running in the bathroom.

Closest sounds: My heater, typing on a keyboard, carrots crunching, fridge humming.

General sound level: Very quiet, relaxing.

One Word: Peaceful

Recreating the sound: Typing, a heater, doors opening and closing, running water, fridge.

9:30 PM sitting alone in Emily Lowe, 201

2. People talking below the window as they smoke on the front steps of the building.  The general hum of the buildings equipment somewhere below.

3. Footsteps in the Hall, then down the stairs.  A sing running, then paper towels in the bathroom down the hall.  Doors opening throughout the building.

4. My laptop’s fan.  The click of the hard drive occasionally.  When there are no other noises, the tick of my watch on my wrist.

5.  It is all ambient noises—nothing in particular standing out, especially when the conversations (which I can’t even distinguish) cease.

6. Still.

7. The hum of the building equipment, the whirr of my laptop’s fan, and the ever occasional noise of people moving in the hall.

1-    Date/Time/Location

–         February 9, 2012 / 1opm /  Hofstra University, Axinn Library, Main Floor between Pura Vida Cafe & Circulation Desk

2-    Identify and list the sounds farthest away from you.

–         Sound of people typing on the public computers, sound of Spanish being spoken in the Pura Vida Cafe, The Hum of the Espresso Machines, People whispering in study groups by the windows, Opening and closing of main doors, Opening and closing of the elevator, Security Scanners

3-    Identify and list the sounds at medium range from you.

–         People talking at the Circulation desk, The Espresso Machines lulling

4-    Identify and list the sounds closest to you.

–         People chatting at the Circulation desk, my fingers on my laptop keyboard, foot tapping on the ground

5-    Describe the general sound level and amount of sound activity.

–         The sound level is rather loud when you focus on it. The noise cumulatively creates a loud murmur throughout the main floor. The main floor has a sort of echo in certain locations, and the circulation desk conversations can be heard loud and clear from the center island tables and chairs where I’m located. This main floor library location creates a sort of surround-sound-effect because a lot of noises are going on at the same time between – bleeping if a book is taken out wrong, conversations at the circulation desk, bleeping to take a book out, the opening and closing of the library doors, the elevator going up – down – and opening/closing, the pura vida cafe, people who work at the cafe and speak mostly in Spanish, people holding group study sessions whispering/chatting, people on their computers/library computers typing.

6-    Assign a one word description to the “sound environment”.

Inside Eatily at Madison Square Park in New York City

General sounds: People moving around through the store/restaurant, eating to my right or visiting the butcher directly across.

04: – Conversation between two men next to me

:17-20 – Clinking of knives behind butcher counter as she cleans them

:25-27 – Hostess counting something out at the bar next to me

:43 – Table setting being picked up by busboy  from a table nearby.

:51 – somebody laughs

:53 – A boot heel squeaks on the floor
