Journal Entry #3

1. 2/16/12   8:30pm    HofUSA

2. Farthest away from me, people are eating in the next room, talking, and laughing. A t.v. in the same room as me plays some kind of show or music video.

3. At a medium range, music is coming from the Dance Dance Revolution game in the arcade, along with other various arcade sounds.

4. The sounds closest to me are the sounds of pool balls being hit across the pool table and people commenting on whether it was a good shot.  My friends next to me are talking about where their food is.

5. The general sound level is very loud and there is a large amount of sound activity coming from every direction.

6. I would describe this environment as “hectic”.

7. Three sounds essential to this environment are the sounds being made at the pool table, the sounds of the arcade, and the sounds of people talking in the other room with their food.  The environment is meant to be a hangout, and these sounds represent that idea.

1. 2/16/12 11:39AM Student Center

2. Chairs siding against the floor, glass plates clinking, murmurs, doors opening and shutting.

3. A gentleman talking at a table close by, the giggling of a girl, the laughing of a guy, hands clapping in what sounds like a handshake, snapping.

4. My soda bubbles fizzing, my phone vibrating, my cough.

5. There is much sound activity occurring, yet the sound level is very low and muffled.  It’s as iff the volume has been turned down on something that should be much louder. It;s almost relaxing.

6. Tranquil.

7. The murmurs, the plates, and the chairs sliding against the floor.

3- Kathryn and Flynn talking in the doorway of the lounge, Phil typing on his computer
4- The music playing on my computer, the sound of me typing on my own computer
5- All of the talking is getting louder and is starting to blend together. The footsteps and door opening join in randomly, my music seems low and calming in all this chaos.
6- Distracting
7- the doors opening, the voices in the lounge, footsteps outside

Journal Entry #3

1.  Thursday Feburary 16th at 4pm-Nail Salon at Roosevelt Field Mall

2. The sounds that are farthest away from me are the faint sounds of the escalators moving, people walking by the salon, and people chatting as the walk by the salon.

3.  The sounds that are at medium range to me are the sounds of running water from a woman washing her hands and a nail dryer running.

4.  The sounds that are closest to me are of the workers in the salon that are speaking to one another in a language that I do not understand and the woman sitting next to me is talking on the phone.

5.  Since it is a small place, the sound is circulating around one enclosed area so it gets pretty loud.  There are dyers running and people talking over the dryers, so the sounds are a bit ear-piercing at times.

6.  “noisy”

7.  Nail dryer, workers talking in a language that I do not understand, and the woman talking on the phone.

Sound Observation #3

Once a week
Perform the following for a “sound environment”.
List each appropriate item separately and in order:

1- 2/16/2012. Lieden Lounge. 9:58 pm

2- Guys are dragging their feet along the tile floor in their slippers attempting to do laundry before the break

3- Girls are gossiping and chatting before they head out to the bar
4- The buzz of the headphones with my mom silent on Skype
5- The girls chatting is very loud and high-pitched
6- Exuberant
7- On a normal Thursday night, people gossiping about going to the bar and talking about how wasted they are going to get is an exuberant part of the Lieden house. Another important sound heard in the Lieden house is the sound of feet shuffling because most of the people in this house have either just woken up or are hungover. The third important feature of the sound in Lieden is the doors opening and closing

Journal Entry #2

1.  Wednesday February 15th at 4pm in the News Hub at WRHU – Hofstra’s Radio Station

2.  The sounds farthest away from me are people chatting in the hall-since the door to the news hub is open and I can hear a door opening and closing outside the room

3.  The sounds that are at medium range are people typing on the computers and people chatting inside the news hub about what stories they are writing today

4.  The sound that is closest to me is the radio.  88.7 WRHU is playing in the news hub on the television that is right above the seat I am sitting in.

5.  There is a lot of commotion going on in the news hub. Since the radio is on and there are many different conversations going on in the news hub, people have the tendency to talk louder and above everyone else.  So the noise level is relatively high.

6. “Rambunctious”

7.  Radio, chattering in the background, and the sound of people typing on the computers.
