Location: 10th Floor of the Axinn Library
Farthest Sounds: planes flying by, the elevator moving here and there, birds (crows?) outside, sometimes hitting the windows with their wings
Medium Sounds: gusts of wind, occasional thunder, the heater making noises, chairs and film equipment being moved around, fun music being softly played in between takes
Closest Sounds: my friends and I talking and laughing, my friends and I in awe of the sudden tremendous downpour, the sound of very heavy rain thrashing itself at the windows and the ceiling, closer thunder, us shuffling around, dancing, goofing and enjoying the rain, keys jingling
Sound Description / Level: loud, yet peaceful — I love the sound of pouring rain. I don’t care for light rain and I dislike “average” rain. It sucked that it was pouring at times when we had class (like before sound class), but it was enjoyable now because we were in the library the entire time just enjoying it from the inside.
Important Sounds: laughter and dancing, keys jingling, the sudden downpour and thunder, moving of equipment

1 – 1/27/14 – 12:39pm – Axinn Library, second floor
2 – Identify and list the sounds farthest away from you.
Numerous students conversing in the adjacent room.
A group of people shuffling toward the stairwell door.
3 – Identify and list the sounds at a medium range from you.
Students talking to each other on the red couches.
The student printer, printing out homework.
The “pinging” noise the elevator makes as it approaches the second floor, along with the opening of the elevator doors.
The stairwell door closing loudly.
4 – Identify and list the sounds closest to you.
My repetitious typing on the computer’s keyboard.
The drone of the heat registers in back of the computer monitors.
Students flipping through the sheets of their study guides near me.
5 – Describe the general sound level and amount of sound activity.
The general sound level and rate of activity feel moderate for the second floor. The noises of the keyboards are generally consistent. The loud voices of the other students prove to be distracting as they carry out their conversation, while other students are completing assignments.
6 – Assign a one word description to the “sound environment”.
Busy.
7 – Select and list 3 sounds which are essential to the sound environment.
The typing on the computer keyboards.
The elevator’s noises.
The consistent sound the heat registers make.
1) 2/13/13, 11:15AM, Outside Axinn Library
2) Sounds of people walking (steps they’re taking, shuffling of feet, “clonk” sound of shoes with heels maybe), people talking
3) More people walking and talking, the automatic door that leads to south campus consistently opening and closing, the occasional “Thank you” as someone probably hold the door for someone else, sounds of doors leading to south campus closing, people pushing door bar in to open door
4) Stomach growling, slight squeaking of hinge of Axinn Library door as door opens and closes
5) Loud, very high activity. The volume gradually got lower the further away I was from the sound (considering that is usually how sound works in nature), but the door sounds that were of medium distance away were generally louder than anything else
6) “Foot-Traffic”
7) The sounds of the doors constantly being pushed open, the ambient sound of people chatting, the “clonk” sound of large-heeled shoes
In the Axinn Library. Copying a play.
