Sounds Heard: My good friend came over to do homework with the night before, and she fell asleep in my room.  I woke up early to keep working, and she was breathing very calmly.  The way people breathe when they are fully asleep is very interesting, as an automatic body function.  I could never fake this rhythm as a kid to convince my mom I was sleeping.  I also wanted to test the microphone on my iPhone and see if it would pick up any of the traffic or birds outside.  It’s great at picking up soft, close sounds like breathing, but doesn’t seem to catch anything from outside.

(I got her permission to upload a creepy clip of her breathing.)

Bonus Recording!

Location: Social Sports Kitchen — Friday, April 19, 2013, 12:11 am

I was having a few drinks with friends and decided to take out my phone to record the barflies singing along to the music.  This clip is funny to me because, without fail, whenever I tell people that I am recording sounds for class, someone says, “Kat, put your shirt back on!”  I even used one such recording a couple weeks ago, from my improv rehearsal.

Location: Social Sports Kitchen — February 17, 2013, 6:33 pm

Sounds Heard: I am taking a lap around the interior of the restaurant/sports bar in which I work, starting first in the dining room, in which the raucous voices of the men who decided to stay and get drunk after the Hofstra Wrestling Team’s Poker Tournament can be heard cheering and carrying on loudly.  About halfway through the sound bite, my shoes can be heard on the wooden floor, as the noise dies down abruptly with my transition into the kitchen (the door of which can be heard).  I make my way past Elvis, the bar back, (apologizing for getting in his way) as a kitchen staff member moves a rack of clean silverware.  I complete my loop by pushing through a swinging door and reentering the main room of the bar, at which point the inebriated patrons can be heard once again.

Once a week
Perform the following for a “sound environment”.
List each appropriate item separately and in order:

1- 2/16/2012. Lieden Lounge. 9:58 pm

2- Guys are dragging their feet along the tile floor in their slippers attempting to do laundry before the break

3- Girls are gossiping and chatting before they head out to the bar
4- The buzz of the headphones with my mom silent on Skype
5- The girls chatting is very loud and high-pitched
6- Exuberant
7- On a normal Thursday night, people gossiping about going to the bar and talking about how wasted they are going to get is an exuberant part of the Lieden house. Another important sound heard in the Lieden house is the sound of feet shuffling because most of the people in this house have either just woken up or are hungover. The third important feature of the sound in Lieden is the doors opening and closing
