Journal Entry #4

1.  Thursday February 23rd at 1:20pm in my journalism class (Dempster Hall) during a test

2. The sounds that are farthest away from me are people walking outside the classroom and they are talking as they walk by.

3. The sounds that are at a medium range to me are the professor typing on his computer in the front of the classroom and a student in the class that is opening up his bag.

4.  The sounds that are closest to me are the sound of the person sitting to the left of me erasing an answer on her on paper and the person sitting to the right of me is breathing heavily.

5.  The general sound level is soft and there isn’t much going on.  Everyone is concentrating on their test.  There is not too much going on besides the sound of typing on a computer keyboard, a bag being zipped open, heavy breathing, erasing, and the faint sound of people walking and talking outside the classroom.

Field Recording #3

Thursday February 23rd at 1:30pm – In the common room of my dorm

The microwave is heard in the background because I was heating up my lunch.  You can also hear the microwave ending because of the beeping sound at the end of the recording.  The television is also in the background.  You can hear a commerical about nutella and a hair product.

Sound Environment Observation 3 – A hiking trail

Sound Environment Observation 3 – Boxford, Massachusetts – A hiking trail

1-    Date/Time/Location

–         February 16, 2012 / 7:00pm /  Hiking Trail / Boxford, MA

2-    Identify and list the sounds farthest away from you.

–         There is this siren sound which is coming from a surrounding town. From far away I can hear birds chirping, and rustling leaves, and the sound of rain falling (pitter pattering) onto the ground/trees.

3-    Identify and list the sounds at medium range from you.

–        Patrick (my boyfriend)’s Dad talking coming from my left side, and the sound of Rudy (their dog) tampling along behind us. Along with Patrick and his Dad in conversation.

4-    Identify and list the sounds closest to you.

–         The sound of my sketchers hiking boots crunching leaves and grass beneath me. The sound of gushy/wet terrain newly gushified from the rain which has now become a light drizzle which is audibly hitting my jacket and hood covering my head. I can also hear my own panting breath as I try and keep up with Patrick and his Dad’s walking pace. Also the awkward sound of the snow gloves I borrowed brushing against my jacket.

5-    Describe the general sound level and amount of sound activity.

–       It is pitch black outside and all we have is one flash light. All that could be heard once the siren went away were the peaceful outdoors. I feel surrounded by life – between the woods and the animals… and Rudy trailing us. The sound activity for me feel heightened since we’re briskly walking on the trail. I would describe it as a peacful excitment… and anticipation of what’s to come. Walking through the woods is a surround sound experience because you are surrounded by living things… and it was heightened even more so because of the drizzling rain… which makes it exciting – yet relaxing. Of course our effect on the environment created disturbances because of our conversations.

6-    Assign a one word description to the “sound environment”.

–         Embraced

7-    Select and list 3 sounds which are essential to the sound environment.

–        Boots on the terrain, The rain drizzling,  Nature and living things making living-thing noises

Christian
1. 2/17/2012 8:00am 1208 Estabrook.
2. The sound of cars zooming along on the turnpike, a garbage truck makes its “backing up” noises. In the farthest distance, the sound of a plane flying away. (The pitch is moving down)
3. The sound of dressers opening and closing, a few keyboard clicks from my roommates computer as he checks his email in the morning. The sound of cloth against skin as a shirt is put on. The sounds of bags rustling and the crack of a plastic water bottle.
4. The sound of a computer hum, mixed with the ambient sound of a heater on low. My computer keyboard.
5. The sound environment is generally dominated by silence, with each sound happening almost one by one, the occasional car, the occasional keyboard clicks, the loudest sound at any time is the sound of a dresser closing.
6. Mornings.
7. The sounds of the dressers would be one of the most important, with the bag zipper sound and the clothing against the skin, those are pretty much the essentials to communicate the story of mornings.
