Jane St Backyard (4/23/26, 12:20am)

Farthest – Cars on Hempstead Turnpike, the sound of roadwork machinery, an ambulance siren.

Medium – Crickets chirping, the leaves in the trees rustling.

Closest – The fire crackling, friends chatting quietly, a guitar being played.

Sound Level – Low

Description – Peaceful

Essential Sounds – The guitar, the fire crackling, my friend’s voices.

Journal Entry 4/10/26

April 10th, 2026 – McDonald’s

Furthest sounds are coming from the kitchen (voices of the workers, machines beeping, general clatter)

Medium sounds are coming from other tables (other patrons eating and talking, kids screaming)

Closest sounds are coming from my own table (my friend talking to me, the sound of his food wrappers)

The sound level was quite high when we first got there, lowered a bit by the time we were done eating.

Busy

People talking, the machines in the kitchen beeping, kids screaming.

 

Journal Entry 3/27/26

My room, 5:52pm, 3/27/26

  • A distant plane flying overhead, birds chirping, a car’s engine revving, voices coming from the backyard (or a neighbor’s backyard).
  • The dog barking, my mother typing on her computer in another room, my brother walking down the stairs.
  • The hum of my computer’s fans, my phone buzzing, my chair creaking as I lean back.
  • Everything is either very muted or just very quiet.
  • Peaceful, calm.
  • My computer’s fans humming, the birds chirping.

2/27/26, 3:46pm

(Inside delivery van driving down Jericho Turnpike.)

Identifiable Sounds:

-Van’s suspension working

-Van’s breaks squeaking

-The van’s engine revving up

-The wheels on the asphalt

-Small, unknown object bouncing around the back of the van

-A man’s voice on the radio

-An excerpt of “Enter Sandman” on the radio

Journal Entry #2

1- 2/20/26, 1:16pm – City Line Florist

2- Co-workers chatting in the back room, a large truck driving past the store, general main road ambiance from outside.

3- The doorbell ringing as a customer walks in, a co-worker greeting them by the front.

4- The fridge door sliding closed, the humming of the fridge itself, another co-worker talking on the phone at the front desk, a customer’s footsteps, the cash register being opened.

5- Moderate. Mostly quieter, occasionally interrupted by louder, more prevalent sounds.

6- Busy

7- Co-workers talking, the fridge humming, the cash register opening.

Field Recording #1

Location: My front porch, 5:30pm

Identifiable Sounds: My dog’s leash, sounds from the kitchen inside (mostly the clattering of plates, I can also make out the sound of the dishwasher being opened), the front storm door opening and closing, footsteps, a dog barking blocks away, my neighbor dropping a hubcap in his driveway across the street, some birds chirping, ambient wind.

Journal Entry #1

1. Bits and Bytes, 6:30pm (2/5/26)

2. A refrigerator door closing, chatter from a table on the other side of the room, sounds of cooking utensils and ovens from the kitchen areas.

3. The hum of the drink refrigerators, the soda machine being used, ice being dispensed, someone pulling plastic utensils from the dispenser.

4. My friend collecting her garbage from dinner, a three person conversation to my right, the fan overhead and behind me, the table rocking back and forth and hitting the ground because of its uneven legs.

5. Moderately noisy. Much quieter than Bits usually is during the day. Everything starts to blend together as soon as I stop paying attention and becomes white noise.

6. Bustle.

7. The sound of human voices, a fan humming, kitchen utensils banging together.
