2- Furthest: The sounds from the workers cooking, the slight hum of the building, the fan blowing
3- Medium: People chatting at the table next to me, the workers having a conversation at the cash register, a phone ringing across the room.
4- Closest: My friend telling me a story, my bracelets jangling as I type, keyboards clacking, brief clips of people’s conversations as they walk by.
5- Sound level and activity: low, it’s still early and there’s not many people inside, the calm before the storm of common hour

Sounds heard: people chatting, zipper on backpack, footsteps, breeze

  3. Medium sounds: footsteps of people walking by, people yelling to each other, door to Bits opening/closing, breeze blowing

  6. One word description: spring

  3. Medium sounds: chairs scraping against the floor, keys rustling, coats unzipping
  4. Closest sounds: conversation about zodiac signs at the table next to me, crunch of french fries, sounds of videos playing from phones/laptops
  5. Sound level is high, it’s crowded and there are a lot of people taking a break between classes

  2. Farthest: People walking in through the doors chatting, a worker changing the trash bag
  3. Medium: The football game on the TV, people in surrounding tables talking, one table laughing hysterically
  4. Closest: My friend eating her salad, my other friend clanking her glass bottle on the table, my keys tapping as I type
  5. Sound level: loud
  6. One Word: boisterous
  7. Three Words: chatting, football, eating

2- Identify and list the sounds farthest away from you.

  • The rumble and crackling of the radiator
  • The morning news on the television
  • The door opening and closing
  • The wind brought in by the opening and closing of the door

3- Identify and list the sounds at a medium range from you.

  • The footsteps of students
  • The rotation of the ceiling fan
  • The shaking of sugar packets by a cafeteria worker at the coffee machine
  • A student pulling out a chair and arranging their things

4- Identify and list the sounds closest to you (You can include internal sounds if noticed or relevant).

  • The humming of the toaster oven
  • The conversation happening between cafeteria workers
  • My pen writing on paper

5- Describe the general sound level and amount of sound activity.

  • The general sound level is low but the sound activity is very low.  It is still considered early in the morning for most people, so there is no conversation made by any passing students. It is also a time where the cafeteria is generally empty. Most of the sounds are coming from objects.

6- Assign a one word description to the “sound environment”.

  • Asleep

7- Select and list 3 sounds which are essential to the sound environment. Note: you need to try and figure out what sounds make up this environment and which of those sounds need to be there for the feeling of the environment to stay intact.

  • The conversation among the employees
  • The humming of the toaster
  • Footsteps
