Study Room of my dorm late at night
The tapping and clacking of me typing hard and fast on the keyboard – I am working to get all my ideas out on paper as fast as possible so I will be able to finish soon, as it is rather late. Coheed and Cambria’s song “Number City” plays in the background.
1. 4/22/12 Internship office
2. The sounds farthest away from me are my two supervisors chatting in their office and the sound of the coffee machine brewing.
3. The sounds at a medium distance from me are a girl coughing, two people talking about Game of Thrones, and people laughing.
4. The sounds closest to me are the girl next to me talking on the phone, people from neighboring cubicles typing, and my stomach growling.
5. The sound level is somewhat low and sporadic.
6. I would describe this sound environment as “engrossed”.
7. Three sounds essential to the sound environment are the people typing, the coffee machine brewing, and people talking nearby. Everyone is being productive but having fun at the same time.
April 3rd at 10:23 in my friend’s dorm room.
“That 70s Show” is playing in the background. You can also hear a computer in the background overheating and some typing at one point.

Sound Environment Observation 2 – Hofstra University, Axinn Library
1- Date/Time/Location
– February 9, 2012 / 1opm / Hofstra University, Axinn Library, Main Floor between Pura Vida Cafe & Circulation Desk
2- Identify and list the sounds farthest away from you.
– Sound of people typing on the public computers, sound of Spanish being spoken in the Pura Vida Cafe, The Hum of the Espresso Machines, People whispering in study groups by the windows, Opening and closing of main doors, Opening and closing of the elevator, Security Scanners
3- Identify and list the sounds at medium range from you.

4- Identify and list the sounds closest to you.
– People chatting at the Circulation desk, my fingers on my laptop keyboard, foot tapping on the ground
5- Describe the general sound level and amount of sound activity.
– The sound level is rather loud when you focus on it. The noise cumulatively creates a loud murmur throughout the main floor. The main floor has a sort of echo in certain locations, and the circulation desk conversations can be heard loud and clear from the center island tables and chairs where I’m located. This main floor library location creates a sort of surround-sound-effect because a lot of noises are going on at the same time between – bleeping if a book is taken out wrong, conversations at the circulation desk, bleeping to take a book out, the opening and closing of the library doors, the elevator going up – down – and opening/closing, the pura vida cafe, people who work at the cafe and speak mostly in Spanish, people holding group study sessions whispering/chatting, people on their computers/library computers typing.
6- Assign a one word description to the “sound environment”.
– Pzazz
7- Select and list 3 sounds which are essential to the sound environment.
– Espresso Machine Lull, Keyboard Typing Sound, Bleeping of Books/Security Scanners
1) 3/10/11-2:45 p.m.-Hammer Lab
2) The sounds furthest away from me included the hum of the printers, the squeak of the printers
as they printed paper, creaking of the door opening and closing, a beep sound as people swiped
into the lab, a janitor emptying a trash can and slamming it back on the ground, someone using a
stapler, and student employees talking to each other behind the desk.
3) The sounds in medium range from me included fingers typing on computer keyboards, chirp
of someone’s phone receiving a text, car keys hitting the tabletop, jackets rustling, footsteps, and
coughing.
4) My knuckles cracking, my fingers typing on the keyboard, the knob on my mouse grinding as
it scrolled, and my mouse sliding across the table would be considered sounds closest to me.
5) The sound level was low because people were concentrating on their work. The lab is usually
a very quiet place. There were sounds coming from many sources, but many of the sounds were almost inaudible.
6) Meek
7) The hum and squeak of the printers, typing on computer keyboards, and the beep of the swipe
into the lab.

2) Secretary typing and clicking her computer mouse, sigh from person walking by the lounge, printer printing paper, indistinguishable talking in a personal office, and hum from the ventilation were the furthest audible sounds from my position.
3) The sound of people unwrapping candy and chewing, a newspaper rustling, talking, water pouring into glass from a blue water cooler, and shoes clicking would qualify as medium range sounds.
4) My pen clicking, seltzer water fizzing, and my own breathing would be considered sounds closest to me.
5) The sound level was fairly quiet, but the sound activity was high. The sounds I heard were not very loud, but sounds were coming from all over the lounge from many different sources.
6) Pleasant
7) Secretary typing, unwrapping candy, and newspaper rustling.
