- Farthest Sounds: lights buzzing, computers humming, door unlocks and opens
- Medium Sounds: two girls talking in a hushed tone, computer mouses clicking, staccato phone buzzes, key board clicks, printer beeps, feet clomping
- Closest sounds: Alex’s foot tapping, keyboard clicking, two short phone buzzes, paper crinkles while being folded.
- Sound Level: Minimal, low but rapid
- Sound Description: Productive
- Most important sounds: Keyboard, phone buzzes, girls talking in hushed tone.
1) 2/5/15, 9:50pm, study session in Michael Caizzi’s room
2) Farthest: Cars driving (inappropriately fast) in the Colonial Square parking lot, someone upstairs dropping things on the floor.
3) Medium: Clock ticking in the suite, quiet chat in the neighboring room
4) Closest: Michael talking and typing on his keyboard, the HVAC blowing cool air, Judy Garland on vinyl.
5) The sound level and activity is pretty low. No sudden fluctuations in the kinds of sounds, or the volumes of them.
6) One-Word Description: Homey.
7) Three Sounds Essential to the Environment: The “buhhhhhhhhhhh” of the HVAC (it is relaxing and makes a steady background noise). The typing on both of our keyboards (sounds like productivity in tandem). Judy Garland singing “The Trolley Song” (warm, familiar).

- Nicole, another supervisor, moving around in her chair
- The dial tone of the phone as Nicole picks up the phone

- Mary, the office’s administrative assistant, typing at her desk.
- Mary picking up the phone and dialing.
- Mary talking on the phone.
4- Identify and list the sounds closest to you.
- Ariel, a GA in the office, clicking furiously on her mouse, trying to achieve an unknown goal.
- Kathleen, another Student Aide, taking a seat next to me and wishing me a good morning.
- A student being assisted typing on the computer across from me.
- The clicking of my own keyboard as I navigate our office website.
5- Describe the general sound level and amount of sound activity.
- The noise level in OSLA is not loud, however, there is a lot of small noise occurring, as everyone in the office goes about their daily tasks.
6- Assign a one word description to the “sound environment”.
- Efficient
7- Select and list 3 sounds which are essential to the sound environment.

Sound Observation 6 – Hammer Computer Labs

2- Identify and list the sounds farthest away from you.
– The sound of the door sporadically opening, and people “swiping” in with their IDs. Along with the sound of the printer sporadically printing. And far away typing.
3- Identify and list the sounds at medium range from you.
– The sound of other people typing.
4- Identify and list the sounds closest to you.
– The sound of my key pad as I type. As well as the sounds of the mouse at times…. and my breathing.
5- Describe the general sound level and amount of sound activity.
– The sound level is very minimal. Everyone is very hushed especially since its early in the morning. Not much sound apart from the sudden sound of the door or printers, and the light pitter-pattering of keyboards.
6- Assign a one word description to the “sound environment”.
– Stillness
7- Select and list 3 sounds which are essential to the sound environment.
– Keyboards pitter-pattering, Printers printing, The door opening/closing with IDs being swiped.
