Field Recording #6 – Dylan Pojano

Location: On a field that is between the Field Hockey Field and the parking lot with the Three Bears Statue. Basically where I did last weeks field recording.

Sounds: Through the large amount of gusting winds and rain, I moved around a rusty old commercial-grade irrigation sprinkler. It creaks and irks as the metal tries to glide across itself, attempting to reclaim the glory days for when it used to with ease. Eventually, from all the moving around, the chain that was on it falls and what was holding it bounces up and down for a bit. I move the rusty chain around itself for a bit, and then I leave it alone entirely, so it may return to its dormant sleep.

Field Recording #6 – Ash Boone

My friends and I (Brennan, Tori, Arianna, and Dianté) sitting in the Bread Box (Brennan’s car) in the parking garage of Roosevelt Field Mall on the evening of Free Pretzel Day at Auntie Anne’s. I intended to record just the sounds of the parking garage, but a spider had entered the car and landed on me and Brennan lost it. Tori is cracking up, Arianna is wondering if I had started recording yet, and Dianté is jamming to music.

Location: Island Rock rock climbing gym in Plainview

Farthest Sounds: The front desk associate speaking with incoming members, people talking and trainers speaking to the trainees, the chiming of the bell on the front door as it swung open and closed.

Medium Sounds: People walking around on the safety mats, the clapping of hands with gripping powder, the music heard overhead.

Closest Sounds: My feet digging into the grips on the walls, my hands scraping the grips, people plunging to the mat below, the jingling of my keys in my pocket as I climbed.

Sound Description / Level: Loud and energetic. Every sound contributed to the active energy of the climbers in the room.

Important Sounds: People plunging down to the mats, the clapping of hands with powder, my feet digging into the wall grips.

Sound Journal Observation Entry #6 – Dylan Pojano

4/23/2021, 9:31 pm, the balcony in the Student Center

Sounds farthest away to me: People walking to and from the unispan, some occasionally stopping to order from Brooklyn Slice. Brooklyn Slice, exhausted but not relenting, continuously cooks pizza after pizza, slapping in a new pizza in the blasting oven, just for the poor hungry souls of the students of Hofstra.

Sounds at a medium range to me: A trash bin is wheeled around from the restaurants that are closed, picking up the thin plastic bags of garbage from each one. The Starbucks floors are being cleaned of all the hectic non stop orders they receive. First an old broom removes the floor of any hair and crumbs, and then an audibly damp mop is used to remove all the spilled drinks that have long since dried up. Then they finally close and lock up the creaky metal walls of all the restaurants, allowing them to rest until tomorrow’s busy day.

Sounds closest to me: Sitting not too far from me are some of my friends, as they laugh and talk about whatever is happening to them in life. As I sit and tap away at my computer, eager to join them, as I pound away at the keys as if it were their fault.

The general sound level and amount of sound activity: An above average sound level, but the overall amount of sound activity is high as there is so much going on, even though it appears as though there isn’t.

One word description to the “sound environment”: Moribund

Three sounds which are essential to the sound environment: Large squeaky bins, brooms sweeping, and metal walls being locked up.

Location: 10th Floor of the Axinn Library

Farthest Sounds: planes flying by, the elevator moving here and there, birds (crows?) outside, sometimes hitting the windows with their wings

Medium Sounds: gusts of wind, occasional thunder, the heater making noises, chairs and film equipment being moved around, fun music being softly played in between takes

Closest Sounds: my friends and I talking and laughing, my friends and I in awe of the sudden tremendous downpour, the sound of very heavy rain thrashing itself at the windows and the ceiling, closer thunder, us shuffling around, dancing, goofing and enjoying the rain, keys jingling

Sound Description / Level: loud, yet peaceful — I love the sound of pouring rain. I don’t care for light rain and I dislike “average” rain. It sucked that it was pouring at times when we had class (like before sound class), but it was enjoyable now because we were in the library the entire time just enjoying it from the inside.

Important Sounds: laughter and dancing, keys jingling, the sudden downpour and thunder, moving of equipment

Field Recording #5

Location: On a field that is between the Field Hockey Field and the parking lot with the Three Bears Statue.

Sounds: I found a very large stick that I used to cut the air with several times, sometimes I would even hit the ground and a thud like sound would be made. The stick did unfortunately break in the middle of the recording, so it quickly evolved into me breaking it several times, making crisp cracking noises like I was breaking into a walnut, all before the overall sound is engulfed by the wind.
