Journal #6

1. 1am Monday morning, Mineola Station.

2. There are voices in the distance, mixed gender, they sound drunk, lots of happy shouting. I can hear the bells that warn cars a train is coming, and I think I may be hearing the train as well, but it is still far off.

3. There is the ever present traffic noise from the car bridge over the tracks. There are workers salting the platform that have taken a break and are standing around chatting. Bits of their conversation drift towards me and I notice their Long Island accents.

4. I can hear the sound of the wind blowing against the hood of my coat and the pages of my book flipping.

5. The general level of noise is maybe 5 out of 10.

6.

7. Train bells, traffic, workers

5- Describe the general sound level and amount of sound activity.
It’s strange. At this time of morning, it seems as though I am in a cushion of soundlessness. It is noisy far away from me, but in my immediate location, quite quiet. I would like to say this is a result of the meditation exercise; that I can calm the physical world around me with my powers of focus. But that is slightly improbable, isn’t it?

6- Assign a one word description to the “sound environment”.
Routine

7- Select and list 3 sounds which are essential to the sound environment.
• Mouth Breathing

Field Recording #5: “Opeh Yo Sessy Mouf!”

Date/Time/Location: 2/28/2014, 9:15 PM, Shiro of Japan

I’ll call this recording “Opeh Yo Sessy Mouf,” because that is what our super fun hibachi chef said to some of the girls in our party.  He was a blast, and the entire group had so much fun, I had to capture it as a field recording.

Featured Sounds: The laughter of our entire table, our voices sounding in an impressed choir of “Oooo,” specific voices (one being Sophie’s), the flame bursting on our table, the general sounds of the restaurant, our fun chef entertaining us and shouting things like “FIRE MAN” when he uses a plastic toy to hose down the big fire, and his spatula and knife hitting the table.

Sound Journal #6

1. 3/6/2014, 4:30, Hofstra Gym Aerobics Room

2. Identify the sounds farthest from you:  Furthest from me, I can faintly hear the basketball game across the hall.  I can’t hear squeaking shoes or hoops being shot, but I can hear the large group of boys hooting and cheering on the court.  One guy shouted down the hall between the court and the aerobics room, and I could hear that.

3. Identify the sounds at medium range: At medium range, I can hear the man exercising to the right of me huffing and puffing with purpose as he does his exercise ball sit-ups.  To the left of me, I can hear the Insanity DVD playing on a computer.  I can also hear the girl watching and doing as she is being directed to do so by Insanity.

4. Identify the sounds closest to you: Closest to me, I can hear the floor heating/AC units buzzing faintly.  I can also hear my own breath, as I have just finished my exercises that I use the aerobics room for.

5. General sound level and activity: Whenever I am in this room, I  feel as though I am in a force field  (the kind in The Incredibles) of sounds.  I can still make out the sounds outside of the room, but the ones inside are contained and isolated to their respective parts of the room.  The general activity is respectful and moderate, while there are intense and physically loud actions taking place.

6. One word to describe the sound environment: Progressive

7. 3 essential sounds to the sound environment:

– Insanity playing on the laptop

-The huffing and puffing of the man next to me

-The shoes of the girl exercising along with the video
