Journal Entry 1

1) 2/3/11-9:30 p.m.-Lounge on the 12th floor of Alliance Hall

2) The occasional DING of the elevator doors opening as well as the television in the far off room were the furthest audible sounds.

3) The sound of people talking, doors opening, and chairs moving, all sounds coming from adjacent rooms would qualify as medium range.

4) The florescent lights above were the closest external sound, but considering I was quite sick, my own haggard breathing was by far the closest sound.

5) The sound activity was low; only two people heard speaking to one another, while the television in the furthest room away had high sound levels and was quite loud even though I was in another enclosed room a distance away.

6) Mellow

7) The noise from the television, elevator dings, and people talking.

Journal Entry 1

1- Thursday February 3rd, 4 pm. Parking lot outside Nassau Dorm Hall, Inside my parked car.

2- The sounds farthest away from me are other cars on Oak Street, the school across the road is letting out and I can just hear kids yelling at each other.

3- Sounds at a medium distance are other people trying to shovel out their cars, a seagull or some other bird crowing.

4- The closest sounds are my own breathing, the occasional vibration of my cell phone, if someone walks directly past my car I can hear them talking and their shoes crunching on the snow and ice.

5- Its surprisingly loud when theres a lot going on, the constant motion of others trying to dig their cars out is almost amplified in the quiet of my car. The ignition is off, leaving it quiet, but outside is loud. Even my own breathing seems louder when there’s nothing else going on.

6- Peaceful.

7- The sound of my breathing, people outside digging out their cars and walking around, other cars driving on Oak Street.

1- 2/2/11- 12:19 p.m. – My Dorm Room

2-There is a faint noise of an airplane flying away outside and someone is using the shower down the hall.  There is a very very faint noise of people talking either in their dorm room or outside.  Every so often I hear the quiet beep of the elevator as it reaches each floor.

3-  I can hear the sounds of my roommate typing at his computer and the printer warming up.  The refrigerator and microwave unit produces a low hum as well as the air conditioning unit.  There is always some sort of tapping or scraping sound that comes from above our room.

4- My computer has a fan noise that is prominent when close to it.  My sniffling and coughing are very noticeable sounds as well as the typing that I am doing.  Another sound is the vibration from getting a text on my phone against my desk.

5-The general sound level is low but there is a lot of sound activity.

6- Calm

7- Typing, low humming sounds and the distant airplane.  I think of these as soft sounds that help create a calm environment.

Journal Entry 1

1- Thursday, February 3rd, a friend’s apartment on Front Street.

2- Someone is coughing, and there are firetrucks in the far distance. I can also hear a clock ticking.

3- A dog is trying to open a door with her paw, someone is typing, and the wind is causing the house to creak. Occasionally someone gets up and moves around.
4- There is someone asleep next to me, and they are snoring, and occasionally muttering to themselves. I can hear my stomach growling.
5- It’s very quiet, there isn’t a great deal of noise going on, only the occasional movement of people in the apartment as they come and go to and from class.
6- It feels sleepy.
7- The clock ticking, the house creaking, and the person snoring would be essential to this environment.
