Journal Entry #2

1) February 9th, 2012 – 3:45p.m. – Unispan

2) The sounds furthest away from me were the cars driving underneath me, people chatting from a distance and echoing voices from the student center.

3) The sounds at a medium distance from me were even more people chatting and a student on his bike approaching.

4) The sounds closest to me were my footsteps and those from people near me, even closer chatting, My friend’s squeaking backpack, and the wind hitting the glass next to us.

5) The sound level was incredibly loud, and never ending. This is because it was passing periods and the unispan is a narrow concrete structure which is enclosed and traps all sound.

6) One word to describe this sound would be “bustling”.

7) Three sounds essential to the sound environment are, student’s voices, and footsteps, and the cars underneath us.

2- The air conditioner running, the people in the downstairs lounge talking, very distantly.

3-  Rachel’s pencil moving across her paper, Shannon typing on her laptop.

7- The TV, the laptop keys, and the pencil moving across the paper are all essential sounds to the environment at this time. It creates a very studious feel.

Journal Entry #2

1. 2/9/12, 11:27 pm, Colonial Square

2. The sounds farthest away from me are the t.v. playing in the other room and my friends talking loudly. Through the wall in the next suite there is a girl yelling.

3. The sounds at a medium distance away are the jingling sound as someone takes off a belt, and their feet making sound on the tile floor. A chair is pulled out. Mouse clicks are heard.

4. Close to me I can hear the fan-like sound of the HVAC. I also notice how much I am sniffling.

5. The general sound level is somewhat quiet, the sounds are spread out. The sound activity is steady.

6. This environment can be described as “sporadic”.

7. Three sounds essential to the sound environment are my sniffling every so often, the random mouse clicks, and the t.v. going in the background.  These sounds make up what can be considered a “dorm” environment, where there is a mix of productivity and procrastination.

Sound Environment – Observation 2

Georgia Andre’

Sound Environment Observation 2 – Hofstra University, Axinn Library

1-    Date/Time/Location

–         February 9, 2012 / 1opm /  Hofstra University, Axinn Library, Main Floor between Pura Vida Cafe & Circulation Desk

2-    Identify and list the sounds farthest away from you.

–         Sound of people typing on the public computers, sound of Spanish being spoken in the Pura Vida Cafe, The Hum of the Espresso Machines, People whispering in study groups by the windows, Opening and closing of main doors, Opening and closing of the elevator, Security Scanners

3-    Identify and list the sounds at medium range from you.

–         People talking at the Circulation desk, The Espresso Machines lulling

4-    Identify and list the sounds closest to you.

–         People chatting at the Circulation desk, my fingers on my laptop keyboard, foot tapping on the ground

5-    Describe the general sound level and amount of sound activity.

–         The sound level is rather loud when you focus on it. The noise cumulatively creates a loud murmur throughout the main floor. The main floor has a sort of echo in certain locations, and the circulation desk conversations can be heard loud and clear from the center island tables and chairs where I’m located. This main floor library location creates a sort of surround-sound-effect because a lot of noises are going on at the same time between – bleeping if a book is taken out wrong, conversations at the circulation desk, bleeping to take a book out, the opening and closing of the library doors, the elevator going up – down – and opening/closing, the pura vida cafe, people who work at the cafe and speak mostly in Spanish, people holding group study sessions whispering/chatting, people on their computers/library computers typing.

6-    Assign a one word description to the “sound environment”.

–         Pzazz

7-    Select and list 3 sounds which are essential to the sound environment.

–         Espresso Machine Lull, Keyboard Typing Sound, Bleeping of Books/Security Scanners

2-people doing laundry in the laundry room

3-vending machines buzzing and people near the elevators

4- the main doors occasionally opening and closing and Volunteers (By Jefferson Airplane)

5- there are a lot of sounds, but they are all muffled or low

6- comforting

7- the hum of the vending machines and sound of the washers and driers are both very essential to the overall environment because they are constant and a sort of white noise that makes the environment more comfortable to be in. The music is also essential. At least for me good music that I am comfortable with keep good feelings in tact.

Journal Entry #2

1- 2/6/12, 1:30pm, in my car on I-95.

2- The radio coming from a car a couple cars behind me, the sound of the cars going south bound.
3- the sound of the tires on the road and the horn of the truck next to me.
4- My radio playing and the hum of my speakers
5- Loud and the radios create a beat and the cars going southbound create dashes of sound as they go back us. The horns of the truck pierce the steadiness of the other sounds.
