1. 3/13/2014, Vander Poel 1207, 1:40 AM

2. Identify the sounds farthest from you: Furthest from me, I can hear someone leaving their room and entering the bathroom.  There is also this constant, but not annoying, buzzing of the AC/Heating unit in our room.  If the wind blows particularly hard, I can hear the effect it has on the windows of our 12th floor room.

3. Identify the sounds at medium range: Marina cutting her resumes and stapling them to her headshots.  I can hear the brand new, and totally awesome, paper-cutter slicing the pages. I can also hear her concentrated sniffling, as she works over her pages.

4. Identify the sounds closest to you: Closest to me, is the song coming from my computer, which is John Mayer’s “Badge and Gun.”  My new phone has also alerted me to a new text message during my journal listening time.  I can hear myself sigh (John Mayer related?).

5. General sound level and activity: The general sound is peaceful and productive.  It is a very hectic time of the year, and my roommate and I are tackling everything we have to accomplish this last week before Spring Break.  The sound is comprised of music to keep a certain level of focus blended with the actual sounds coming as the result of focus.

6. One word to describe the sound environment:  Particular

7. 3 essential sounds to the sound environment:

-The music from my computer

-The paper-cutter

-The AC/Heater buzzing

1. 2/27/2014, 4:00 PM, Reference Room of Axinn Library

2. Identify the sounds farthest from you: The farthest sounds I can make out are whatever noises people from outside of the reference room are making.  I am not particularly close to the doors, but there seems to be an occasional loud person getting the attention of a friend in the “non-quiet” zone.  I cannot hear any sounds that are being made through the library windows.

3. Identify the sounds at medium range: Because this room is reserved for silent working, I feel that any cough or shift is magnified because it stands so alone.  Today, there is a lovely rule breaking gentleman on his phone.  It seems as if he is trying to fool us all by walking behind the stacks of reference materials and moving closer to the window and distancing himself from the cubicles, but I can still hear that he is talking to a friend about plans for tomorrow night.  I can also hear, very clearly, coughing and sniffling from the other cubicles.

4. Identify the sounds closest to you: Closest to me, I can hear the keyboards of the Macs occupying the cubicles on either side of mine and a little bit of the one behind me.  The light above my desk is buzzing extremely faintly, but I can still hear the buzz of it.  I can also hear my jeans moving against the chair when I shift in my seat.  I have cleared my throat a few times since I have been listening as well.

5. General sound level and activity: The general sound level is extremely low.  However, the sounds that I do hear represent plenty of activity because of how they are paced.  This room does not provide the best study environment for me because the general level of sound and activity is too low for me. It makes me feel sleepy.

6. One word to describe the sound environment: Critical

7. 3 essential sounds to the sound environment:

-The typing on keyboards

-The occasional cough

-The cubicle light buzzing

1. AMC Theatre 8, Roosevelt Field Mall, 8:03

2. Identify sounds farthest from me: The door to the theatre opening at the back, latecomers shuffling to their seats, a vacuüm in the distance

3. Identify sounds at medium range: The kid a few rows down opening his bag of overpriced candy, muffled conversations between family members, the text noises made by an iPhone that someone has not silenced.

4. Identify sounds closest to me: Even though relatively far from me, the sound of the movie blasts into my ears. The kid next to me crunching on his popcorn, and the person to my left slurping down a soda.

5. General sound level and activity: It’s surprisingly noisy for a movie trip, but there is still that typical hush that comes in movie theaters. It seems as if not many people are actually paying attention to the movie, but are instead concerned with their snacks and drinks.

6. Word to describe sound environment: Disrespectful

7. Three sounds that complete the sound environment:
-The sound of the movie in my ears

-The texting noises

Someone speaking obnoxiously loudly in the hallway; they must be walking by because I can hear their voice grow louder, and then fade out.  It sounds like they (or someone they were walking with, perhaps) were swinging their keys back and forth, because I could hear a rhythmic jingling.

One of my suite mates intermittently yelling and laughing extremely loudly at a television show or movie on her television or computer (which I can also hear, though faintly), another suite mate coughing.

4- Identify and list the sounds closest to you.
Jukebox the Ghost playing from my iPod dock, softly.  The steady drip, drip, drip from my heater into the garbage can placed under it as it hums, wheeze-like (I should really get that fixed…), the squeak of my bed as I shift position.

5- Describe the general sound level and amount of sound activity.
Medium level and activity.  It’s lower in my room, but it’s certainly higher in my suite mate’s room.
