February 22nd, 2017, 6:33pm, Freshens in the Student Center

Sound Description: Annoying girls gossiping about their friend, people are talking and laughing, very lively.

  1. 4/27/2016, 7:27pm, L216
  2. Far: people talking as they go up and down the stairs, laughter
  3. Medium: the studio door opening and closing from various people walking in and out
  4. Close: music playing from the computer, my own typing
  5. Level: Medium
  6. One word: Calm
  7. 3 sounds: music, studio door, laughter

1- 4/23 Student Center dining room 8:00pm

2- The smoothie machine grinds loudly on and off and two girls in the line are fooling around a little, and their laughter echoes

3- The boys at the table next to us are listening to rap music on speakers, alternately singing along, talking and “oohing” over things.

4- My table is filled with the rugby team, who, as usually, is extremely loud. Two people are deciding whether the long smoothie line is worth braving, another is begging them to get something they like so she can have some. A group of people are yelling across the table to eachother about the details of the last game we played. The girls next to me are discussing getting together to watch a movie later.

5- Sound level and activity are medium high

6- animated

7- the grinding of the smoothie machine, the girls yelling about the game and the tin-y rap music playing from small speakers.

1- Happy Pi Day!

03/14/2013-12:03 AM-The living room of my house.

2- Sounds farthest away from you: The tinny sound of a housemate drying her hair upstairs.

3-Medium range: The opening and slamming of the refrigerator door, cars occasionally driving by outside; I can imagine the different sizes of the cars based on the different pitches they emanate. A low and deep sound reminds me of a large jeep, a higher thinner sound of a smaller vehicle like a Camry.  Someone washing dishes in the sink, dumping out water from cups.

4- Sounds closest to you: Five lively housemates talking and eating pie.  Sounds vary from loud talking and laughter, sometimes whispering for emphasis, my typing on the computer.

5- General sound level and amount of sound activity: Very high sound level and amount of sound activity but not in an intimidating or aggravating way. Sounds are coming in from all directions at all different volumes but it is a warm and welcoming envelopment.

6- One word description to the “sound environment”: Youthful.

7- 3 sounds essential to the sound environment: Talking, laughter, hair dryer.

Location: Houlihan’s (the restaurant) in a booth.

Sounds heard in the clip: Eliza is singing along with the music that is playing: Unwritten by Natasha Beddingfield. I am heard saying “Wait for the break” Stefanie says that we need to “get some harmonies in there” and there is general murmur of people talking in the restaurant underneath. Very fun times.

Listen to

1- March 3, 9:40am, LIRR train from Mineola to Penn

2- High pitched humming in the background due to the heating system at the other end of the car, other train-like mechanisms make soft noises off and on.

3- The sounds of the train moving on track creates a hypnotic lull, an announcement is made regarding the next station and that patrons should watch the gap between the train and the platform,  the doors ding and slide open with a groan

4- The person in the seat in front of me coughs occasionally and ruffles the papers of their newspaper; when the doors open, a large gaggle of high school girls with a chaperone, talking and laughing loudly – clearly on a field trip of some kind. They discuss a woman they saw on the train another time who decided to appear in public topless in high pitched voices, talking over each other and finishing each other’s sentences.

5- The sound level and activity begin at a low and are abruptly shifted to a high sound level and activity

6- Interrupted

7- The background humming, the clacking of the train tracks, and before: the shuffling of the newspaper, after: the loud chatter and laughter

2. The sounds farthest away from me are my two supervisors chatting in their office and the sound of the coffee machine brewing.

3. The sounds at a medium distance from me are a girl coughing, two people talking about Game of Thrones, and people laughing.

4. The sounds closest to me are the girl next to me talking on the phone, people from neighboring cubicles typing, and my stomach growling.

5. The sound level is somewhat low and sporadic.

6. I would describe this sound environment as “engrossed”.

7. Three sounds essential to the sound environment are the people typing, the coffee machine brewing, and people talking nearby.  Everyone is being productive but having fun at the same time.
