2. List the sounds farthest from you.

  • Plane engine overhead

3.  List sounds at medium range from you.

  • Shouts of people playing on the soccer field
  •  Cars driving in the parking lot to the left
  • The howling wind

4. List sounds closest to you.

  • My footsteps
  • My keys and coins jingling in my coat pocket
  • The tree branches and shaking

5.  Describe the general sound level and amount of sound activity.

Despite there being a lot of sounds occurring at the same time the sound level was pretty calm.  Also despite it being fairly chilly it seemed like a spring day and the sounds were a big part of it.  The sound of people playing outdoor sports on a sunny day creates a very spring feeling.

6. Assign a one word description to the “sound environment”.

Spring

7.  Select and list 3 sounds which are essential to the sound environment.

  • People playing soccer
  • The wind
  • The shaking tree branches

Field Recording #7

Location: Enterprise, 6th floor

Sounds Heard: You can hear the sounds of my resident playing the electric guitar in his room, the sounds of my residents harmonizing and singing in the bathroom and then having  a conversation. You can hear the shower running in the background of them. Whether or not they were singing in the shower is unknown and I wasn’t about to find out.

Sound Journal #8

1- Monday, March 24, 2014, 9:43pm, Enterprise, 6th floor

2- Identify and list the sounds farthest away from you.

Furthest away from me, I can hear the sounds of some of my residents playing the electric guitar as well as the sound of the shower in the boys bathroom.

3- Identify and list the sounds at a medium range from you.

At medium range from me, I can hear the voices of my residents as they sing in the bathroom and proceed to hold a conversation. (Yes, I did ask their permission to use this sound clip.)

4- Identify and list the sounds closest to you (You can include internal sounds if noticed or relevant).

Closest to me, I can hear the sound of my breathing as I listen to their voices and distract myself from the mountains of homework I have to do.

5- Describe the general sound level and amount of sound activity.

The general sound level is that of a typical Monday night on my floor. Everyone is busy doing something, but it is soft and relaxed. Everyone is getting used to being back from break and just enjoying being back on campus.

6- Assign a one word description to the “sound environment”.

Relaxed

7- Select and list 3 sounds which are essential to the sound environment. Note: you need to try and figure out what sounds make up this environment and which of those sounds need to be there for the feeling of the environment to stay intact.

Three sounds that are essential to the sound environment are the sound of the shower in the background, my residents harmonizing and proceeding to have a conversation, and the residents playing the electric guitar in their room.

Sound Journal #8 – Psibrary

1. The Psibrary, Thursday, March 27, 2014, 5:30 pm

2. Identify the sounds furthest from you: I believe there’s some dance class going on right now because I can very faintly hear the vibrations of music.

3. Identify the sounds at a medium range to you: Pedro, Laura, Corinne and others are laughing and watching YouTube videos in the lounge. The door to Lowe slams shut. High heels stomp down the hallway.

4. Identify the sounds closest to you: Abbie is sitting at the desk, listening to soft jazzy music and singing along very softly. The sound of her voice is soothing and offsets the chaos in the lounge. She’s talking to Phil and me about Tumblr. Phil starts to play a video on YouTube and it conflicts with the soft music from Abbie’s computer.

5. The general sound level/activity: It’s about medium, with the undertones of the music being played in either 108 or 106. The soft music from Abbie, and the uproar of the lounge.

6. Word to describe sound environment: Jazzy.

7. The three sounds that complete the sound environment:
— Abbie’s soft music
— Laughing in the lounge
— Undertones of music from dance class
