Sound Journal Numero Four (Game Time in the Dorm)

>The shower running in the background. The water sputters every 8-10 seconds. There’s a nice mixture of the soft tapping of the individual droplets and the sloshing splashes of the water that hits the body and falls to the ground.
>My roommate singing that one Avicii song about brothers or something.
>That one Avicii song about brothers or something is playing very very softly, probably because he doesn’t wanna wake the neighbors.

3- Identify and list the sounds at a medium range from you.
>The soft blip-blips of my PC as I sit across the room from it, ignoring the continuous notifications on my game.
>The “whirr” of my PC’s fan, desperately trying to cool a machine that’s put in way too many hours a day.
>The news that’s on in the next room over, something about the olympics.

4- Identify and list the sounds closest to you (You can include internal sounds if noticed or relevant).
>My two suitemates playing a very intense online game, the sounds are a mixture of grunts, shouts, and the occasional profane exclamations of how “done they are with this motherf**kin’ game.”
>The crashes, explosions, slicing, clashing of metal, lion-like roars, and the occasional “An ally has been slain” from the games they are playing.
>My laptop making ‘boo-dwee’ tones as facebook notifications roll in in the group chat.

5- Describe the general sound level and amount of sound activity.
>The sound level is on the very uncomfortable border between noisy and loud.
>The amount of activity is relatively high, or seemingly so with all the noise coming from the computers.

6- Assign a one word description to the “sound environment”.
>Intense.

7- Select and list 3 sounds which are essential to the sound environment. Note: you need to try and figure out what sounds make up this environment and which of those sounds need to be there for the feeling of the environment to stay intact.
>The noises from the game.

Journal #4: WHAT ARE YOU DOING UP THERE???

2. Identify the sounds farthest from you: Farthest from me, I can hear my AC unit.  It is off, but it always makes some kind of white noise.  I can also hear Marina’s sleeping breathing/snoring  (Do I have to ask permission for this???).  Whenever someone opens a door in the hallway or goes into the bathroom, I can hear them and the door they open and close.  I actually really like the sound of people moving around on my floor.  It is less lonely when you know other people are awake at 3:00 AM.  However, the sounds at medium range have got to stop… [WARNING: dramatic post]

3. Identify the sounds at medium range:  The sounds at medium range are the focus of this journal entry.  I don’t know what event is going on on the 13th floor of my building once or twice a week at 2:00-4:00 AM, but it sure is annoying and disconcerting.  I am not the best sleeper, so tonight, I am taking a moment from trying to fall asleep to note my sound environment…which is not assisting in my entering dreamland.  I think that there is a group of people in the common room above my room either playing a really intense game of foosball or taking a break from studying to practice their sumo wrestling.  There is an occasional boom coming from the ceiling, and it sounds like someone is falling to their knees or body slamming someone to the tightly carpeted floor.  It honestly sounds like the cement ceiling is going to crack and the structure of the ceiling/floor are just going to crumble on to me and my little bed.  Maybe one of those foosball sumo wrestlers will come along with the rubble.

4. Identify the sounds closest to you: When I lifted my phone to record evidence of the annoying sounds coming from above my bed, my elbow cracked.  Elbows make such high-pitched cracks.  I can also hear my breathing when I lay on my side and my right ear is pressed to my pillow.  When I reposition my hand holding my phone, I can hear the way it brushes my phone case, which is a plastic/cardboard hybrid material.  Oh! And I am congested, so I can hear mucus in my head, when I swallow (Ewe).

5. General sound level and activity:  The sound activity is pretty dull, except for when the ceiling sounds like it’s being pounded into pieces.  It’s the middle of the night, so it is quite calm, with intermittent disturbances.

6. One word to describe the sound environment: Disturbed

-Wheels of other cars rushing through puddles
-Wind whistling

3 – Identify and list the sounds at a medium range from you.
-Air creeping through the narrow window opening
-My old car rocking with every bump in the road

4 – Identify and list the sounds closest to you.
– Rain drops hitting the windshield of my car
– Windshield wiper squeaking every time it hits the furtherest limit on both the right and left sides
-Heater

5 – Describe the general sound level and amount of sound activity.
– The sound level is pretty loud. There is a lot of sound activity going on, partly from nature and partly from machines I am using to try to control the nature. Theres a lot going on, and each of these things have a set rhythm to them.

– Effortful

-Rain drops falling on the windshield
– Whistling of the wind
-My car jerking around with every little bump in the road

  • The sounds of video games from the arcade room
  • Clattering of metal from the back kitchen
  • The front doors opening and closing

  • People ordering/talking on line
  • The banging from the air hockey game being played
  • General conversation

4.  Identify sounds closest to you:

  • The girl next to me asking for her order to be fixed
  • The banging of the game of pool behind me
  • The Olympic theme and coverage from the tv.

5.  Describe the general sound level and amount of sound activity:

The room is full of ongoing games and conversation provided by the air hockey and pool tables.  There are general cheers stemming from the games and a white noise of conversation in the background.  The sound level is fairly high as it usually can be described as excited.

  • The pool game

1. AMC Theatre 8, Roosevelt Field Mall, 8:03

2. Identify sounds farthest from me: The door to the theatre opening at the back, latecomers shuffling to their seats, a vacuüm in the distance

3. Identify sounds at medium range: The kid a few rows down opening his bag of overpriced candy, muffled conversations between family members, the text noises made by an iPhone that someone has not silenced.

4. Identify sounds closest to me: Even though relatively far from me, the sound of the movie blasts into my ears. The kid next to me crunching on his popcorn, and the person to my left slurping down a soda.

5. General sound level and activity: It’s surprisingly noisy for a movie trip, but there is still that typical hush that comes in movie theaters. It seems as if not many people are actually paying attention to the movie, but are instead concerned with their snacks and drinks.

6. Word to describe sound environment: Disrespectful

7. Three sounds that complete the sound environment:
-The sound of the movie in my ears

-The texting noises

-The popcorn crunch

Thursday, Feb 20 2014. 7:51P. ABP Dining room.

2- Identify and list the sounds farthest away from you.
• Employees in Kitchen rattling metal baking sheets
• A sink being operated
• The employee entrance door opening and closing

3- Identify and list the sounds at a medium range from you.
• Overhead sound system (playing Top-40 drivel)
• Anonymous person in bathroom is operating the paper-towel dispenser
• Footsteps outside of the window directly in front of me
• Conversation of various topics, spoken by various persons (Beja included)

4- Identify and list the sounds closest to you (You can include internal sounds if noticed or relevant).
• Tapping of chair leg against the floor (the chair is wobbling)
• A/C overhead vent just turned on
• Girl behind me is taking selfies/photographing her food; camera shutter sound effect

5- Describe the general sound level and amount of sound activity.
The room is open and sound travels far. Sound reverberates in a full, clear manner. The amount of sound activity seems normal for this area at this time of day; it is a quiet, focused energy.

2 – Identify and list the sounds farthest away from you.
-An air compressor rattling from one of the nearby buildings.
-People’s conversations as they walk on the sidewalk by Emily Lowe.
-The tires of cars rolling on the concrete entering and exiting the parking lot.

3 – Identify and list the sounds at a medium range from you.
-A van’s engine starting up a couple of parking stalls down from me.
-A car door opening and slamming.

4 – Identify and list the sounds closest to you.
-The WRHU Broadcast playing on the outside speaker of the Herbert School of Communication building.
-The sounds of my shoes swishing in the slush.
-Someone’s cellphone ringing loudly as they walk near me.

5 – Describe the general sound level and amount of sound activity.
-It wasn’t all that quiet in the parking lot, but it wasn’t super loud either. The various sounds I heard today weren’t happening all at the same time, however, the compressor noise was the most constant sound out of all of them.

-Routine.

-The WRHU Broadcast.
-The air compressor rattling.
-The cars coming in and out of the lot.

1- February 18, 2014, 6:15pm, Starbucks on Hempstead Turnpike

2- Identify and list the sounds farthest away from you.

Furthest away from me, I hear the music coming from the speakers above me.

3- Identify and list the sounds at a medium range from you.

At medium range from me,  I can hear the conversations among the patrons as they’re enjoying their coffee at the tables.

4- Identify and list the sounds closest to you (You can include internal sounds if noticed or relevant).

Closest to me, I can hear the sound of the coffee being made and the barista shouting out orders as he finishes them.

5- Describe the general sound level and amount of sound activity.

The general sound level of the Starbucks is loud but consistent. You can tell the patrons are enjoying their time in the coffee shop. The sound activity is calm and comforting. It’s easygoing.

6- Assign a one word description to the “sound environment”.

Comforting

7- Select and list 3 sounds which are essential to the sound environment. Note: you need to try and figure out what sounds make up this environment and which of those sounds need to be there for the feeling of the environment to stay intact.

Three sounds that are essential to the sound environment are the calming music coming through the speakers, the quiet murmur of conversation among the patrons and the sound of the barista calling out drink orders from behind the counter.

• Students in the atrium
• Bookstore Employees preparing for work
• Milk steamer being operated at Café on the Corner

3- Identify and list the sounds at a medium range from you.
• Nikes around the corner of the hallway
• A Pride-Print or Copy machine labors tirelessly in a nearby office
• Wind slashes against the side of the building; windows

4- Identify and list the sounds closest to you (You can include internal sounds if noticed or relevant).
• Very steady, even breathing
• Growling stomache
• Pen scratching against paper
• Wrist is cracking while writing, for some reason

5- Describe the general sound level and amount of sound activity.
The atmosphere is cloistered. The amount of sound activity is low, with every sound seeming not to add to the general noisiness of the room, but seem to attract all the attention towards themselves
