Journal Entry #7

1 – 3/9/14 – Long Island Rail Road Train – 12:20

2 – Identify and list the sounds farthest away from you.
-Someone laughing a considerable amount from the back of the train car.
-The sound of a hole puncher being used.

-3 – Identify and list the sounds at a medium range from you.
-The announcer over the speakers saying New Hyde Park is next.
-Someone opening the doors between cars.
-General conversation at a low level.

4 – Identify and list the sounds closest to you.
-Two guys catching up on what happened over the weekend and their plans for a wedding they are going to next weeked.
-A guy in the row across from me eating food out of a brown paper bag..
-The sound of the train riding on the tracks.

5 – Describe the general sound level and amount of sound activity.
-Aside from the two guys sitting in front of me the sound activity is pretty low, however the two guys are pretty loud and I heard all about their drunken weekend in the city, perhaps too much. I would say that there is a lot of activity between their conversation, the guy eating next to me and the sound of the tracks.

6 – Assign a one word description to the “sound environment”.
-relaxed

7 – Select and list 3 sounds which are essential to the sound environment.
-The train tracks.
-The two guys’ conversation.
-The guy eating next to me.
