Field Recording #5

Location: Outside Hofstra Hall late at night

Sounds: Cars/Trucks driving down the turnpike, Trucks beeping (possibly reversing?), Wind, Walking, then there’s that really eerie sound (that night there was construction happening on the turnpike, they were repaving the road, I saw later there were steamrollers on the road, but I couldn’t figure out what was making that metal rubbing sound)

Journal Entry #5

  1. 4/11/2026, 3:30 pm, Quad outside Lowe.
  2. Farthest: a bird squawking or tweeting, cars going by on the turnpike, planes flying overhead, sirens.
  3. Medium: AC units turning on, the radio at Bits, the leaves.
  4. Closest: People walking and talking, the wind, bugs buzzing.
  5. Sound Level/Activity: It’s peaceful. All of the sounds are at a low level. 
  6. Description: Calm. 
  7. Essential: The wind blowing the leaves, cars going by, birds chirping.

Journal Entry #4

  1. 4/1&2/2026, 11:30 pm – 12:45 am, Cabaret in the Spiegel
  2. Farthest: The creaking from the floors from the stage and aisle, The doors opening and closing.
  3. Medium: People performing and Hosts talking, Clicking from the computer keyboard and/or mouse, chatter from the audience.
  4. Closest: People breathing, Seats moving, creaking, and squeaking, Whispering.
  5. Sound Level/Activity: The level of sound changes depending on what’s happening, if we’re in between acts the level is higher, and if we’re in the middle of an act the level is lower. Switching. Feels both controlled and uncontrolled.
  6. Description: Cabaret.
  7. Essential: Hosts and/or Performers from the stage, Chatter, Floor creaking.

Journal Entry #3

  1. 3/6/2026, 7:00-10:00 pm, Hofstra Game Room during a Mario Kart Tournament
  2. Farthest: Pool (cue balls clashing and going in pockets), air hockey, ping pong
  3. Medium: Music, Talking/Yelling, Mario Kart noises, games, stomping
  4. Closest: Analog sticks and button clicks on the controllers
  5. Sound Level/Activity: A lot of different noises from a lot of different games and people. The level of sounds changes from low to high constantly. Cluttered. 
  6. Description: Arcade.
  7. Essential: Controller noises, games music/noises, talking/yelling.

  1. 2/20/26, 10:16 pm, inside my dorm in Estabrook Hall
  2. Farthest: Shower running, doors opening/closing, muttering, laughing, the elevator ringing, cars going by, toilets flushing, trash being thrown out
  3. Medium: People walking, keys being used to unlock doors, wood creaking
  4. Closest: The fan blowing, the heater buzzing, my phone notifications
  5. Sound Level/Activity: The sound level is low and inconsistent
  6. Description: Quiet
  7. Essential: Phone notifications, doors opening/closing, muttering

  2. Farthest: People throwing trash into the garbage, a blender, a bag wrinkling
  3. Medium: People chewing, fingernails tapping, chairs moving, music playing
  4. Closest: Plastic utensils being used (like either when they pick up food or when it clicks their teeth), a can being placed down, bags or backpacks being placed down, people sniffing, people talking
  5. Sound Level/Activity: The sound level is moderate, but constant
  6. Description: Crowded
  7. Essential: The music, people talking, chairs moving
