January 31st 12:07pm Dorm Room

Farthest: tapping outside, cars passing by

Medium: bathroom door swinging, trash can being moved, people upstairs moving around, toilet flushing

Closest: fish tank motor humming, roommates alarm, roommate moving around in bed

Sound Level: Moderately loud.

One word: busy

Sound Journal 1

  1. Setting: February 1st at 8:03 am at my desk in Suffolk Residence Hall, Hempstead, NY
  2. Farthest Sounds: Plane overhead, droning hum of the turn pike, single muted car horns, an engine revving, a car door slams
  3. Medium Sounds: Toilet flushing, the faucet runs, lock turns and clunks, footsteps shuffling across the carpet, the walls tick, a door handle clunks as it turns, door rattles as it shuts
  4. Closest Sounds: Coffee dripping, computer humming and ticking, flatulence against my wooden desk chair, fridge rattling to a settle, pen scratching across paper
  5. Sound Level: Low/minimal
  6. Sound Description: Anticipatory
  7. Important Sounds: Dripping coffee, droning turn pike, computer hum

 

Sound Environment

February 1, 2016, 12:49am, Hague common room. 

Farthest: A dorm room opening, dragging footsteps, squeak of the front door, murmurs of conversation

Medium: The fluorescent light buzzing above my head, the HVAC unit behind me blowing out hot air softly

Closest: The machine whirr of the soda machine, my chair squeaking below me every time I move, keyboard clicking.

Sound level: Quiet, everyone else in the room previously has left to go to bed, so I am left listening to the noises of quiet for the first time all day. 

One word: Unwinding

Three sounds: Whirring of soda machine, HVAC unit blowing air, distant doors opening.

January 31st, 2016. 6:15 P.M. Sidewalk beside C-Square.

Close: Street lamp dully buzzing, footsteps against the grain of the sidewalk, coat fabric swishing

Mid: Opening and slamming of metal doors, keys jingling

Far: Squeaking of an old turnstile, sirens, cars passing distantly on the road

Sound level: Hushed

One word: Peaceful

3 essential sounds needed to create the environment: Street lamp buzzing, footsteps (particularly the crunching sound of shoes against the sand on the sidewalk), and cars passing

  2. Farthest: People emptying their trash, the elevator beeping, my neighbor talking outside her room to a friend
  3. Medium: My music playing Lana Del Rey, my roommate talking on the phone to her mom.
  4. Closest: The heater that’s on right next to my desk, the sound of my nails hitting the keys as I type.
  5. Sound level: Medium. The only thing that’s relatively loud is my music playing, everything else is just the sound of normal, day to day activities.
  6. One word: Ordinary.
  7. 3 Words: music, conversations, tapping

  4. Closest: Static, keyboard clicking as someone types, conversation
  5. Sound level: Mostly medium but fluctuates as people join and leave the Skype call
  6. One word: Entertaining
  7. Three words: Friends, laptop, Skype

  2. Farthest: Roommate’s rap music, muffled conversation and footsteps
  3. Medium: Shower running
  4. Closest: Sound of heater next to my bed, sound of typing on computer
  5. Sound Level: (low) although there are multiple sounds the louder ones are muffled by distance and closed doors, and the closer ones are relatively quiet
  6. One word: Casual

  2. Farthest: Trucks unloading materials, the truck beeping as it backs up, pots and pans clanking
  3. Medium: A group of girls talking about their wild night, chairs sliding, a man emptying the trash can
  4. Closest: the girl sitting next to me eating cereal, typing on my laptop
  5. Sound level: Medium. There aren’t many people in the dining area but those that are here are quite noisy
  6. One word: lively
  7. 3 Words: trucks, pans, chairs

  2. Farthest: Airplane over flying over my house, cars passing by on a wet road, neighbors talking outside.
  3. Medium: TV on in the living room (news channel), bathroom exhaust fan, humming of refrigerator.
  4. Closest: Humming of my laptop fan, clinking of the heating vents, my hermit crabs walking on their gravel.
  5. Sound level: Low (the house is pretty quiet, the loudest thing being the TV)
