Journal Entry

1.  April 3rd at 6:20pm during the chocolate Passover Seder

2.  The sounds that are furthest away from me are sounds of people talking from the hall.

3.  The sounds that are at a medium range from me are a few girls at the end of the table whispering to one another and the sound of someone texting on their phone.  From the sound of it, that person was really pressing down hard on those buttons.

4.  The sounds that are closest to me are the Rabbi and the students saying one section of the Haggadah (the passover prayer book) in unison.

5.  It was very noisy with everyone talking at once and it made me excited for the holidays.

7.  The three sounds that are essential to the environment are the students and Rabbi reading in unison, the person texting, and the two girls whispers.

8th Journal Entry

1. Thursday March 22 at 2pm – outside sitting on a table by Bits and Bites

2.  The sounds furthest from me are the doors opening and closing to the entrance of bits and bites and people walking

3. The sounds at medium range from me are the girls talking at the table next to me.

4. The sounds that are closest to me are the birds chirping. I was also sitting with my friend, who was on the phone, so I heard her whole conversation as well.

5.  The sounds were peaceful.  I was pretty much centered on the birds chirping because it was a beautiful day.  My friend was not talking too loud and the girls at the table next to us were talking relatively soft as well.

7.  The sounds that are essential to the environment are the birds chirping, my friend talking, and the girls talking at the table next to us.

Journal Entry #8

1. 3/21/12  Movie theater screening of Casablanca  7:00pm

2. The sounds farthest away from me are people asking if seats are open and constant chatter and conversation.

3. The sounds at a medium range from me are people crinkling bags of popcorn and grabbing pieces and seats squeaking as they are opened.

4. The sounds closest to me are the advertisemnets playing loudly on the screen and a person opening some kind of plastic wrapper or candy somewhere very close to where I’m sitting.

5. The general sound level is very loud, and the sound activity is heavy.

6. I would describe this sound environment as “cacophonous”.

7. Three sounds essential to the sound environment are people eating out of bags of popcorn, the advertisements playing, and constant talking while waiting for the movie.  These are all symbolic of being at the movie theater.

Journal Entry #7

1. 3/14/12   11:15am   Common hour, bench near Roosevelt Hall

2. The sounds farthest away from me are people sitting at the tables talking and laughing.

3. The sounds at a medium distance are birds chirping in a tree and a door to the building in front of me being opened and shut.

4. The sounds closest to me are people walking on the sidewalk/ground, you can hear their shoes shuffling. I also hear my phone receive an email and it makes a little ringing noise.

5. The general sound level is somewhat moderate, and the level remains fairly constant.

6. I would describe the sound environment as “lively”.

7. Three sounds essential to the sound environment are the birds chirping, people talking behind me, and the sounds of people walking.  They are common sounds for common hour, when people are going to meetings or relaxing before class in the nice weather.

1. 3/1/12  12:40 pm   Breslin classroom

2. The sounds farthest away from me are someone opening the door to leave the classroom and it shutting, someone throwing something out in the garbage, and someone asking my professor a question.

3. The sounds at a medium range from me are someone rummaging through stuff, like a bag or backpack, and the sounds of people talking to each other before our test.

4. The sounds closest to me are chairs squeaking as people move in and out in them and the sounds of pages turning in notebooks and textbooks.

5. The general sound level is moderate and there is a lot of sound activity coming from throughout the classroom.

6. I would describe this sound environment as “anxious”.

7. Three sounds essential to the sound environment are the sounds of rustling papers, the chairs squeaking and creaking, and people asking each other about things for the test. Together they make up a classroom full of students trying to fit in last minute studying and getting situated before a test.
