Journal 5

Godiva Roosevelt Field Mall, Thursday March 1st at 7:30 PM.  (My break time)

Closest: I hear the ice cream machine buzzing right behind me.  Then I hear one of my coworkers take a woman’s order for a hot chocolate, his footsteps move across the floor to the hot chocolate station and I hear him scoop the ingredients, poor the hot water, and turn the blender on.

Medium: I hear customers enter the store and my manager greets them with “Welcome to Godiva”.  There are multiple conversations going on between customers that I can not understand and many footsteps walking around the store and down the stairs that lead to the stalk room.

Furthest: People’s conversations echo noisily outside the store, some sort of cart (maybe a stroller) is being pushed along the tile to make a ‘thud thud thud’ sound, and the escalator creates white noise in the background.

The general sound level is very high, loud, and fast paced.

1 word: Consumerism

Three sounds: The ice cream machine, ‘welcome to Godiva’, and the echoing conversations represent this environment well.
