  2. Farthest sounds: car horns beeping, people walking down California Ave
  3. Medium sounds: cars driving by, sound of brakes, garbage truck driving by, wind blowing, birds chirping
  4. Closest sounds: trees rustling behind me, people talking as they talk by, a woman on the phone
  5. Sound level is high
  6. One word description: commute

Sounds farthest away: Birds chirping, humming of heater (?).

Sounds at medium range: Wheels of luggage rolling, footsteps.

Close-range sounds: People talking, coughing, laughing.

General sound level: medium, average level of sound activity.

One-word description: Lively.

3 essential sounds: Birds, footsteps, people laughing.

I-95 toward Bridgeport, March 15, 2019, 8 pm

Far: police car with sirens on the other side of the highway

Medium: whoosh as other cars pass

Close: radio in the background (the way words are incomprehensible when you’re not really listening), tires against the road, general hum of the engine

Sound level: relatively high, sound coming from everywhere

One word: moving

Essential sounds: police sirens, radio, engine

Sounds farthest away: Arcade games beeping.

Sounds at a medium distance: Footsteps, rustle of candy packages being handled, beeps from registers/card readers.

Close-range sounds: A few people talking, chewing.

General sound level was pretty moderate, low amount of sound activity.

One-word Description: Casual

  2. Farthest sounds: rumbling of cars outside the window, wind against the window
  3. Medium sounds: floorboards creaking in living room, door to bedroom being closed
  4. Closest sounds: stove top sizzle, conversation, fridge door opening/closing, seltzer can
  5. Sound level is low, it’s very relaxed
  6. One word description: homey
  7. Three essential sounds: stove top, fridge door, my housemates’ voices
