2. The wind, an airplane going by. Voices outside
3- Bustling in the hallway. Voices from down the hall, Faint noise of the water running somewhere in the floor above me. A door opening and closing. The elevator doors opening.

2) Wind, people down the hall talking, an airplane passing overhead

5) The general sound level is a normal level, not too loud, but it isn’t quite either. The people’s voices in my room fluctuate being a normal speaking level and louder than normal.

3- Shower running, Sitar playing from an ipod
4- My own breathing, Heater
5- For the most part it was quiet. It was quiet enough to hear my breathing, but every individual sound was loud enough to hear over the others if I concentrated on them. All the sounds were very different, but it did not sound like any of them were in conflict. The sitar was the loudest and most unique sound. The combination of sounds created a calming, laid back atmosphere.

2- Identify and list the sounds farthest away from you. – Furthest away from me I can hear the fans blowing faintly through the space and the sound of brooms across the masonite floor
3- Identify and list the sounds at a medium range from you. – Closer to me I can hear the clang of instruments and rattle of musicians running into the hallow maestro stand. Sporadically, I can hear performers and musicians in excitement passing through the pit doors.
4- Identify and list the sounds closest to you (You can include internal sounds if noticed or relevant). – Closest to me I can hear the smacking of the director’s food as she eats a burrito from the student center and the sound of tictacs being poured into the lighting designer’s hand after she returns from a smoke break. I can hear the distinct action of her clicking the container open carelessly tipping it over into her hand and then grasping two mints. I can then hear her tipping the container back upright and all of the excess tictacs falling back into the container as she places it back on the table. Even closer than this I can faintly hear the white noise coming through my right ear on my headset. It is filled with irregular small clicks and a faint static noise.
5- Describe the general sound level and amount of sound activity. – Considering all of the sound there is in the space, nothing is too loud or overly dominant. There are many actions going on around in the theater all in preparation of the start of the dress rehearsal but everyone is calm. All sounds are coming at me from all directions but softly and calmly; in an equal balance.
6- Assign a one word description to the “sound environment”. – Operational
7- Select and list 3 sounds which are essential to the sound environment. Note: you need to try and figure out what sounds make up this environment and which of those sounds need to be there for the feeling of the environment to stay intact. – Clanging of instruments, Tictac container, brooms swishing

2: Farthest away – someone opening and closing a door down the hallway, the elevator beeping as it opens on a floor someone above or below me, branches on the trees outside my building rustling against one another
3: The TV playing the news faintly in the background, the hum of my heater across the room
4: The wind outside the window beside me howling extremely loud, rain pounding against that same window
5: There’s a lot of sound, but the general level of sound is low – it’s fairly quiet, even though there’s a lot going on

3- Truck idling in the parking lot, car doors closing, indistinct conversation
4- Sprinkling rain tapping on the window, humming of the air conditioner, an occasional sigh of the person next to me
5- Quiet, everything is muffled and calm; the sound activity is low

1- 01/28/2013 1:05 pm Hempstead Train Station, outside waiting for a train.
2-Sounds farthest away: Hail falling to the pavement (reminds me of what skittles would probably sound like if falling from the sky), solitary bird chirping, it’s a high tweet but I cannot identify what kind of bird, kids laughing.
3- Sounds at a medium range: Shoes sliding around and crushing hail as people walk, various adults talking, laughing, and coughing at a low volume.
4- Sounds closest: Ice cold wind hitting my hood, softly whistling in my ear.
5- General sound level and amount of sound activity: Though it seems like there are many sounds going on from my description above, the sounds blend, especially the whistling of the wind and the hail falling, in a way that is almost symphonic. Sound level is low and sound activity seems low as well, despite the many elements that make up the sound environment.
6- One word description: Icy.
7- 3 sounds essential to the sound environment: 1) Hail falling to the pavement, 2) Shoes sliding around and crushing hail as people walk, 3) Ice cold wind hitting my hood, softly whistling in my ear.
