Journal Entry #3

2/16/11, 10:30 pm, Corner table furthest from the parking lot at McDonald’s

The furthest sounds from my location were male and female voices ordering food and the door occasionally swooshing open or clamping shut.

A mid-range distance from me are sounds of more male and female voices, the ruffling of paper bags, and table percussion from hands and elbows.

The closest sounds to me are Conor Burke and Paolo Perez’s voices, the banging of tables, Crinkling of bags, ruffling of hamburger and fry boxes, and the slurping of drinks.
The general sound level for this sound environment could be described as moderately bustling

Percussive

The three sounds that build the foundation of this sound environment are voices, banging of tables, and the slurping of drinks.

Journal Entry

Date, Time, Location: 17th Feb. 9:45pm, outside of Alliance hall.

Far sounds: Cars on Oak street and the Turnpike, airplane flying overhead.

Middle-Range sounds: Students passing nearby – their voices and footsteps – one is eating chips and I can hear the crunch of the chips and the crumple of the bag.

Close or inner sounds: Within about a 5 foot radius of myself, nothing is making sound. I even try to listen for my own breathing or heartbeat, but it seams my body is very good at remaining motionless and quiet. Occasionally, I pick up the sound of some air passing through my nose.

General level of sound: It varies. When no students are passing by, everything is constant but subdued, somehow muted – when students do pass, their voices are very loud.

One-word description: Active

3 essential sounds: Cars, chips and chip bag, students’ voices.
