Sound Journal #2~~ Kaitlyn Bancroft

  1. February 23rd- 7:17pm- My room in Alliance Hall
  2. Sounds farthest away are the shouts of residents in hallway and lobby outside of my door
  3. Sounds in medium range to me is the loud and overbearing noise of air escaping the vents in my laptop as it grows hot, almost like a chugging.
  4. Closest to me is the tapping of my hands hitting the keys as I furiously try to bang out an article the night before it is due.
  5. There seems to be a fair amount of sound activity coming from all directions of the space I am in.
  6. One word: Chaotic
  7. For the feeling of this environment you definitely need the residents to still be screaming and you need the labored chugging of the laptop, the tapping also represents the chaotic nature because it is so rushed, so really every sound identified up top really enforces the sound environment.

DATE: 02/21/2022

TIME: 9:00 am

LOCATION of the sound environment: Dempster Dance Studio Hofstra

  • Identify and list the sounds farthest away from you.

The farthest sound that I was able to hear was the noise of people chatting in the hallway and the shutting of the stairs door.

  • Identify and list the sounds at a medium range from you.

Medium sounds were the sounds of my teachers chatting in the office inside the studio. The noise of the wind and one tree hitting the window of the studio.

  • Identify and list the sounds closest to you (You can include internal sounds if noticed or relevant).

My peers talking, some steps and the noise of dancers turning on the floor with their feet, the music from the piano, the speakers making some loud noises, and my teacher giving instructions

  • Describe the general sound level and amount of sound activity.

Sound level outside was a little loud which is why we had to shut the door, inside was always high level and consistent. The amount of sound activity was consistent since there was a lot going on and because people are always either walking, talking, or creating sounds because of the environment we are in, a dance studio and a communications building.

  • Assign a one word description to the “sound environment”.

Consistent

  • Select and list 3 sounds which are essential to the sound environment.
  • Music from the piano and other instruments such as drums.
  • Sound of the dancers turning on the sticky floor.
  • Sound of the teacher giving instructions

Journal Entry #1~~ Kaitlyn Bancroft

  1. The sound environment took place 02/07/2022-9:30pm-Alliance 12th Floor Lounge
  2. Far sounds include the door outside of the lounge swinging open and shutting closed quickly with force as people walk in and out of the upstairs lounge space.
  3. Medium sounds near me is the constant clicking of controller switches as my boyfriend plays a game, as well as the sound of his slow inhales and exhales.
  4. Closest to me is the dialogue vibrating from the tv. “I appreciate you being vulnerable gabby- will you accept this rose?”
  5. Without focusing it may seem like there is only one sound flooding the room, that being the sound coming from the tv. However when doing this exercise one realizes there is a lot more comprising this sound environment than general droning of the bachelor.
  6. One word: Co-existence
  7. In order for the environment to stay in tact I feel as though the most important sounds are the clicking of the controller, the rise and fall of deep breaths being inhaled and exhaled, and the dialogue blaring from the tv that signifies what I am doing.

DATE: 02/06/2022

TIME: 7:30pm

LOCATION of the sound environment: AKT Manhasset (Fitness Dance studio where I work)

  • Identify and list the sounds farthest away from you.

The farthest sound that I was able to hear was the noise of the car’s wheels sliding on the street. I had not paid attention to it before, but because the studio is so close to the main street it is so easy and possible to hear  how fast the cars are going. It was amazing to stop for a second specially with how fast my job is and just to hear what was around me. It definitely calmed me down and gave me peace before my next class. The other sounds were the closing and opening of the main door which is relatively far from the studio and people talking outside.

  • Identify and list the sounds at a medium range from you.

Medium sounds were the sliding of the AKT clothes hanging on the front shop as clients looked at them. I was also able to hear when they grabbed wipes to clean the boxes and weights, and their footsteps as they came into the studio.

  • Identify and list the sounds closest to you (You can include internal sounds if noticed or relevant).

Sound of the clients’ bags hitting the floor, music from the speakers, the fans, small talk from clients, sound of clients hanging the bands that we use for the workouts on the ceiling, sound of the weights, celebration noises, steps when running or jumping onto the boxes, feedback from the microphone.

  • Describe the general sound level and amount of sound activity.

Sound level outside was low, inside was sometimes loud and then it would go low and medium level. The amount of sound activity was a lot since there was a lot going on.

  • Assign a one word description to the “sound environment”.

Active

  • Select and list 3 sounds which are essential to the sound environment.
  • Small talk amongst the clients
  • Sound of the fans
  • Sound of the weights hitting the floor
