Sound Journal #2

Location: Lowe 106

Far sounds: Chatter in the hallway, typing on computer keys, the unscrewing on a metal water bottle,

Medium sounds: Thuds on the floor across the room, scraping of chair across hall from me, sparse clunking of piano keys, jingle of keys

Close sounds: voices of those rehersing in the room, loud thuds of booted footsteps near my chair,

Sound description/level: Wide variety of soft and loud/sounds. Some softer sounds I found to be more prominent and interesting than the loud, closer ones. There were so many different, varying sounds it was hard to take them all in. It reminded me of a busy street- no extrmely loud noises but the sheer amount of sounds made it feel louder and more intense.

One word for the environment: Barrage

Important sounds: Voices from those rehersing in the room, thud of boots on the ground, loud chatter from the hallway outside

Eve Journal 2

DATE: 02/21/2022

TIME: 9:00 am

LOCATION of the sound environment: Dempster Dance Studio Hofstra

  • Identify and list the sounds farthest away from you.

The farthest sound that I was able to hear was the noise of people chatting in the hallway and the shutting of the stairs door.

  • Identify and list the sounds at a medium range from you.

Medium sounds were the sounds of my teachers chatting in the office inside the studio. The noise of the wind and one tree hitting the window of the studio.

  • Identify and list the sounds closest to you (You can include internal sounds if noticed or relevant).

My peers talking, some steps and the noise of dancers turning on the floor with their feet, the music from the piano, the speakers making some loud noises, and my teacher giving instructions

  • Describe the general sound level and amount of sound activity.

Sound level outside was a little loud which is why we had to shut the door, inside was always high level and consistent. The amount of sound activity was consistent since there was a lot going on and because people are always either walking, talking, or creating sounds because of the environment we are in, a dance studio and a communications building.

  • Assign a one word description to the “sound environment”.

Consistent

  • Select and list 3 sounds which are essential to the sound environment.
  • Music from the piano and other instruments such as drums.
  • Sound of the dancers turning on the sticky floor.
  • Sound of the teacher giving instructions
