Sound Observation 5 – Patrick’s apartment in Astoria

– Date/Time/Location

– March 9th  / 7:00am / Patrick’s room / Patrick’s apartment

2- Identify and list the sounds farthest away from you.

– The sound of airplanes taking off and landing from Laguardia (or possibly even JFK). The faint sound of cars driving by, and a car making a beeping sound as its pulling out of a nearby driveway. The sound of his roommate’s music playing at the other side of the apartment in another room. Birds chirping outside.

3- Identify and list the sounds at medium range from you.

– The sound of the floor boards creaking as his roommate walks from one end of the apartment to the bathroom. The sound of his roomate audibly peeing in the bathroom which is right by Pat’s room, and then going towards the kitchen which is located near Pats room as well. The sounds of the kitchen being activated and a coffee machine beginning to make coffee. The sounds of clanking silverware and dishes being taken out.

4- Identify and list the sounds closest to you.

– Patrick’s heavy breathing and on and off snoring patterns. My own deep breaths.

5- Describe the general sound level and amount of sound activity.

– The sound level is sort of a hushed lull. There aren’t any jarring sounds… just apparent sounds that can easily be ignored (well… apart from the peeing… that’s kind of blunt). Even the further away – larger sounds – easily fade away if you don’t think too much on them.

6- Assign a one word description to the “sound environment”.

– Gentle

7- Select and list 3 sounds which are essential to the sound environment.

– Heavy breathing, floors creaking, airplanes landing and taking off.

Sound Observation #6

1) 1:00 p.m. – wednesday March 7th, 2012 – outside Au Bon Pon

2) Furthest away were cars on California Ave. Trucks, and an airplane.

3) At medium range were students eating at the door at ABP closing.

4) Closest to me was my friend walking and talking with me.

5)  The sounds far away were very loud, a truck had it’s engine running and another was honking deeply and loudly, while a plane was overhead, this made it all sound as if there was a train right on the street.

6) Decieving

7) Trucks, Honking, and Plane.

Journal Entry #6

1  March 8th at 11:30am at the Megillah reading ( a reading done on the Jewish holiday of Purim)

2  The sounds that are furthest from me is someone walking by the door to the room we are in and people are laughing outside as well.

3. The sound that is at a medium distance to me is one of the Rabbi’s whispering to a faculty member in the back of the room.

4.  The sounds that are closest to me are the young gentlemen reading the Megillah in Hebrew and the people listening are using noise makers to block out the word “Haman” whenever it is read.  One of the Rabbi’s is also screaming “boo” whenever the word “Haman” is used.

5. It is loud in the room with a cheerful vibe.

6. Cheerful

7. It is a holiday celebration and the most important sounds needed for the environment are the man reading the Megillah, the noise makers, and one of the Rabbi’s screaming “boo”.

Field Recording #5

When I was sitting in my room this morning, I found this song on Youtube. My friend introduced me to this cover band, Boyce Avenue, a few months ago and I really like their music.  It is Katy Perry’s song “Teenage Dream” and I just came across this song today. Boyce Avenue sings it at a slower pace and uses a different voice range when hitting his notes.
